First Sunday of Lent
February 25, 2007

Father,
through our observance of Lent,
help us to understand the meaning
of your Son’s death and resurrection,
and teach us to reflect
it in our lives.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen

LENTEN FASTING AND ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS

All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent and Ash Wednesday. All Catholics between ages 18 and 59 are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. To fast means to eat one full meal; the other two meals that day should be less than the normal amount unless they are already at a minimum for good health. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed. March 7 is an Archdiocesan Ember Day. Traditionally, Ember Days are days of prayer and fasting. The intention of this Ember Day is for the healing of victims of child sexual abuse and their reconciliation with the church. To fast means to eat one full meal; the other two meals that day should be less than the normal amount unless they are already at a minimum for good health. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed. Observance of the Ember Day is encouraged but not obligatory.

Reflecting on the Gospel

PH3

“Don’t tempt me!” Without thinking, these words pop out of the mouths of dieters who are offered a hot fudge sundae or someone who is trying to quit smoking when offered a cigarette. While these may be serious enough temptations for the dieter or would-be nonsmoker, the temptations put to Jesus in this Sunday’s readings are far more invasive, for they cut to the quick of Jesus’ identity, that of Israel, and of us. Jesus’ identity as the Son of God was revealed at his baptism. Following this, Jesus was led into the desert “by the Spirit” and there confronted evil. Twice the devil taunts Jesus, “If you are the Son of God.” Jesus is being tested about how he will be the Son of God-whether or not he will use his power for his own advantage. His choices-both in the desert and throughout his ministry-reveal who he really is. Every choice ultimately is about identity. While he is God, he humbles himself to be fully human. In the desert, by resisting the devils’ temptations, Jesus embraces humanity’s finiteness, needs, and simplicity-these characterize who Jesus is rather than a raw use of power. “If you are the Son of God”. . . ironically, doing what the devil offers seems at first sight to be proper actions for the Son of God. Yet by resisting the devil’s temptations does Jesus truly act as who he is: bread does not fill, but the Spirit does; worshiping false gods does not give power, but serving the true God does; testing God in false ways does not bring salvation, but relying on God’s care does. The true identity of the Son of God is revealed not by using his power selfishly but by preparing himself for his mission of bringing salvation to others.

GENERATIONS OF FAITH
What does “Generations of Faith” mean? The leadership of the church has been encouraging communities to put more resources into Adult formation since the early 80’s. We have had training and workshops to help us plan events that can encompass all age groups. On Wednesday, March 14th we are planning to have St Patrick’s first intergenerational gathering. The evening will begin at 6 pm with dinner, at 6:40 pm we will have a large group prayer. Following prayer the age groups will split into different groups to reflect and learn more about the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. Following the age group presentations we will re-gather have a hands on project to involve all ages and close with prayer and send each person or family with a home packet to enrich your understanding of these two sacraments. Lent is a time to renew your spiritual journey and spend some time with parish members reflecting on the message of the Church. Plan to be there. Sign up sheets will be available in the church.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY

Whatever Lenten practices we undertake, it is important to remember their purpose. Lenten practices are not about losing weight or finally stopping smoking, but they are about deepening our baptismal identity as children of God and members of the Body of Christ. “If you are of God”. . . this is the identity conferred upon us at baptism. This is the identity out of which we enter into our own Lenten desert. This is the identity out of which we face our own worst temptations. By remaining faithful to who we are-God’s children, members of the Body of Christ-we can resist temptations and grow in our relationships with God, self, and others. Traditionally, Christian penance has always included three prongs; fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. This suggests to us that penance isn’t a matter of “giving up” something, nor is it a single act-even if performed faithfully over a long period like forty days. Christian penance has as its purpose genuine conversion of life, so that at the end of Lent when we renew our baptismal promises we are able to do so with full throat, well aware of our own wonderful identity as sons and daughters of God. The new life we celebrate at Easter cannot happen without our dying to ourselves, without our going to Jerusalem with Jesus and willingly embracing whatever death is in store for us. For that is the road to new life. That is the road we travel during Lent.

FRIDAY NIGHT SOUP-SUPPER & STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Each week we will have two different groups from our parish hosting the Soup-Supper and the Stations of the Cross. There will be sign-up sheets in the vestibule of the church and in the parish center each weekend prior to the Friday in order for each group to plan for the supper. Supper begins at 6pm with Stations following at 7pm. A free will offering can be made to help off-set the cost of the meal. This is a great way for families to gather together for a simple meal and join in one of our Church’s oldest Lenten prayer traditions. All are welcome. Plan for these Fridays now.

This is a free presentation and you won’t want to miss it.

PARISH WIDE FAITH FORMATION SET FOR MARCH 14 & 15

During this Lenten season we will be examining the Sacraments of Healing; the Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation. Look for more information in the weeks to come, but plan now to be part of our Generations of Faith, In Christ We Are Reconciled In All Things.

Prayer For the World Day of Prayer
Dear Lord,
we know our world is a fallen one,
tainted by sin.
We are a people separated by language, lands and belief.
Though many things separate us,
help us on this World Day of Prayer(March 2)
to focus on that which unites us.
Help us to see through the fullness of truth only you possess,
that we may love our brothers and sisters of other creeds.
Though we are separated, let us remember
that today we may all be united in prayer to you.
Give us the grace to resolve our differences
with peace, justice and prayer,
and be one in our love for you.
Amen
