The Baptism of the Lord
January 13, 2008

Almighty, eternal God,
when the Spirit descended upon Jesus
at his baptism in the Jordan,
you revealed him as your own beloved Son.
Keep us,
your children born of water and the Spirit,
faithful to our calling.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen

SECOND COLLECTION:
Catholic Communication Campaign
Next week’s collection supports the Bishop’s Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). Fore more than 25 years, the CCC has been spreading the Gospel message locally and nationally on radio, television, in print, and on the Internet. It is only through donations from Catholic parishioners that the work of the CCC is possible. Please contribute generously to the Campaign in the upcoming parish collection next weekend, January 19/20th. Half of the collection will remain in our Archdiocese to fund local Catholic communication efforts. Visit www.CatholicCommunicationCampaign.org for nation program information. Please use the attached envelope.

Reflecting on the Gospel

ep

It is significant, it is good news, that Jesus hears he is “beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased” before his public ministry begins. This exalted identity revealed at his baptism is the starting point for all that he will undertake-his self-giving ministry, death, and resurrection. It is because Jesus knows who he is that he does as he does. As we begin Ordinary time, we do so knowing that in our own baptism God has named us beloved sons and daughters. Like Jesus, all that we undertake must flow from who we are-God’s beloved. Baptism links identity (“beloved Son”) and mission (“bring forth justice”). Jesus’ very incarnation (the Christmas mystery) incorporates his mission because by taking on human flesh, the Son of God became one with all of humanity and, with that, took upon himself humankind’s salvation. In Jesus, birth, baptism, identity, mission cannot be separated. At his baptism the heavens were opened and the Spirit descended on Jesus, anointing him as Messiah (gospel and second reading). Thus anointed, he was enabled to “fulfill all righteousness”, to “bring forth justice to the nations”: he makes the blind see, gives prisoners freedom, brings light to those dwelling in darkness, “shows no partiality,” “went about doing good healing all those oppressed”. The voice from heaven revealed to Jesus his identity and a mission that called forth a response-his life of preaching, teaching, healing, forgiving, etc. This same identity and mission is revealed to us, and calls forth from us the same faithful response. This is our Christian life.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CATECHISTS AND VOLUNTEERS
Religious Education always needs volunteers. If you are interested I would love to help you find a space that would be beneficial to you and the community. I have two volunteers for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. I need two more to begin training. This would be at the 11 am mass. Contact Sue Unger at 503-266-9411 or stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

NEEDS FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
We are in need of some prizes for a couple of activities that will be coming up in the next few months. We have the lock in for Jr High and we are also hoping to have a Sr High lock in as well. Here are some ideas: MP3 player, Ipod, PSP, Wii games, basketball, soccer ball, volley ball, baseball, bat, baseball glove, Blazer tickets, music cd’s, gift cards for any major store, restaurant, or movie. We could also use a CD player that has large room capacity~ the ones we have do not play loud enough for use in the auditorium. A Wii system for the Youth Ministry could be used in many ways for various activities.

YOUTH MINISTRY FUND RAISERS
Thank you for the support throughout the year of the Youth Ministry fundraisers. We are looking at some ideas for the later part of the winter and spring. One way to support is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fundraisers. Tthey are very supportive to our Religious Education programs.

YOUTH MINISTRY AND JR HIGH MINISTRY
The Journey in Faith (6th- 8th grade) group meets on Wednesday night at 7 pm. All are welcome to join us. Our next fun Friday will be April 11th at 7 pm. February 1st beginning at 7 pm all students need to arrive no later than 7:30 pm unless they have special permission from Sue Unger. The Lock in will be over Saturday Morning at 8 am. Our next Confirmation gathering will be January 20th. We will begin at 10:45 am and will meet in the auditorium. You will need your sponsor or a proxy (substitute) sponsor with you for the blessing. Before Mass you will receive last minute instructions and the blessing that will happen at the 11 am mass. We will also have class on the 20th at 4 pm in room 7&8. Sponsors are encouraged to attend. ADULT SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
Lent 2008 – Small Groups
This year Archbishop John Vlazny has invited all Catholics in Western Oregon to come together in small groups to reflect on the Sunday Scripture through the lens of reconciliation and healing. Our parish will join over 80 other parishes to offer our parishioners opportunities to join a group. The groups gather members of the parish once a week for approximately 90 minutes. Each meeting will open with prayer and allow reflections and discussion of the next Sunday’s Mass Readings. Every participant or household will have a booklet to guide them through the process. This Lent please consider joining a small group. Gathering together we make Lent a special season of renewed relationships with our God and neighbors. You can gather with Jerry Giger’s class on Wednesday at 7 pm or with either of the Bible Study groups on Monday morning about 9 am or Thursday night at 7 pm. If you would like to form a group for reflection in your home contact Sue Unger at the office.

WINTER BAPTISMAL PREPARATION
The winter session of Baptismal Preparation is scheduled for Thursday, January 24 at 7:00 pm in the conference room of the parish center. For more information please contact Sara @ 503-266-9411.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
Baptism identifies us as God’s beloved children and our mission is to follow Jesus. The symbolism of the water already says how our own identity is to play itself out in our mission. Plunged into the baptismal waters, we die to our old self rising from the waters, we enter into the new life baptism promises. Baptism inaugurates us into the paschal mystery of Jesus Christ. This dying and rising is the “stuff” of our Christian living. What enables us to continue to say yes to such living is that we know the dying always leads to rising, death always brings life. We know this with certainly because Jesus was baptized, his identity as beloved Son was revealed, he was faithful to his mission to bring forgiveness and justice, he died and then rose. The pattern of Jesus’ life is the pattern of our own lives. Paschal mystery living is as concrete as Jesus’ life and mission. For example, like Jesus, we are living justly when we die to selfishness and rise to the needs of others. Like Jesus, we are “showing no partiality” when we die to judgements and categorizing or labeling others and rise to seeing all people as beloved children of God. Like Jesus, we do good when we forgive; we heal others when we offer kind words instead of words that tear down, or help another without being asked.
