Reflecting on the Gospel

transfiguration

We have all seen little children’s faces light up when offered something they want. Or the glow on the faces of a bride and groom. Or the utter wonder written on the faces of new parents. We’ve seen contentment on the faces of a retired, long-loving couple. Or the elation written on the face of a youngster who just landed her or his first job. Or the excitement of a tee-baller who just made his or her very first hit All of these are familiar human experiences which warm our own hearts as we behold the jubilation of others. These many splendid human experiences, however, are nothing compared to what Peter, John, and James beheld in their Master. “Jesus. . . went up the mountain to pray.” Like us, Jesus sought communion with his God and Father. He most likely didn’t go up the mountain expecting to be transfigured, but his prayerful union with his Father manifested his identity as One who shares in the Father’s glory. Luke explicitly relates the glory of the transfiguration to the glory of the new life that Jesus shares after his resurrection. Luke is the only synoptic evangelist who gives us a hint about the conversation among Jesus, Moses, and Elijah-they talked about Jesus’ “exodus,” that is, his “Passover” which would be “accomplished in Jerusalem.” In this transfiguration account, Luke relates divine affirmation of Jesus’ radical new teaching-considering the demanding sermon of the Plain that we heard on the two Sundays prior to the beginning of Lent and that all his suffering would end in glory. This divine affirmation of Jesus and his mission at the same time includes a divine imperative for us: “listen to him.” On the mountain of transfiguration the disciples witnessed the glory of Jesus’ identity as the “chosen Son.” We, too, are destined for glory when Christ will “change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body”. On that day our identity as God’s sons and daughters will be fully revealed.

LENTEN ACTIVITY FOR JR HIGH AND YOUTH MINISTRY
The Lenten activity for the Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is a collection for our soldiers in Iraq to make friends with the locals. One way they do this is by having little care packages for the kids to help them be comfortable with the soldiers. Spc. Adamm Creel is asking for our community to donate little care packages for the children. The gifts must be non religious and non political. Suggestions for things to bring are: small pads of paper, tooth brushes, small containers of toothpaste, shampoo, hand lotion, etc. also energy bars, breakfast bars or pencils, life savers, match box cars ( these are very popular), clear cellophane children’s party bags to put the items into.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY

At the beginning of Lent, the goal is laid out for us. Jesus went up the mountain to pray and was transformed. Lent is not only a desert (as in last Sunday) but is also our “mountain” that we go up to pray in order to be transformed. Jesus talks about his exodus, his passing through suffering and death to the glory of resurrected life. Our salvation is to follow Jesus into his passion and death so that we, too, might attain the glory of new life.
Our following Jesus is spelled out in the ordinary “dyings” of our everyday living: reaching out to visit a lonely elderly person, listening to a troubled adolescent, biting our tongue instead of saying sharp words, still having patience when we’ve been pushed too far. The utterly amazing thing about our embracing these little, everyday “dyings” is that we ourselves experience a kind of transfiguration. As we learn to say yes to God and others, we grow deeper into our own identity as the chosen ones of God. We become more perfectly members of Christ’s Body, when we act like Jesus did-when we reach out to others who are in need, when we bring a comforting touch, when we forgive. God’s command to “listen to” Jesus isn’t a passive hearing words; we listen by doing as Jesus did. Our whole life, then, is a transfiguration, a passing over from our old sinful ways to the ways of light and grace offered by God.
