Sunday Event in Annual Mass Eucharist Schedule

Forth Sunday of Lent
March 18, 2007

TASTE AND SEE THE GOODNESS OF THE LORD

Father,
through our observance of Lent,
help us to understand the meaning
of your Son’s death and resurrection,
and teach us to reflect
it in our lives.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen

SECOND COLLECTION
A special collection will be taken up at all the masses for The Catholic Relief Services Collection this weekend, March 18/19. This collection makes possible the American Catholic Church’s global mission to combat poverty, provide relief and development, assist refugees and immigrants, and advocate for justice and peace in situations of conflict and neglect of basic human rights. Please give generously.

AN INVITATION TO CELEBRATE THE HEALING SACRAMENTS
The Lenten Penance Service is scheduled for Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 pm. The Sacrament of Reconciliation, or Penance, is one of the two Healing Sacraments. In this sacrament we are given the opportunity to heal the division in our souls which comes about when we are separated from God by sin; to heal the division in our relationships with one another which comes about when we are separated from one another by sin; and heal the divisions in our communities which comes about when we are at odds with one another because of sin. Personal, familial, and communal, God desires us to be a whole and healed image of the Trinity, united in love and faith. As we approach the great Easter Celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus, let us come prepared, with clean hearts and souls, united in love and service to one another. Join us for the Lenten Penance Service this Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 pm

A SPECIAL CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Sunday, March 25, 2007 Fr. John will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The second Sacrament of Healing, the Anointing of the Sick, is for anyone who is sick, whether physically or suffering severe mental or emotional anxiety, preparing to go into surgery, or for the elderly. The effects of the Anointing of the Sick are: giving strength during times of sickness and pain, calling to the attention of the community of believers the need of extra care and support during times of illness, and providing comfort and the assurance of the healing presence of Jesus with us in all things. We will have a brief liturgy followed by individual anointing’s beginning at 10:00 am on Sunday morning. This wonderful sacrament is to bring about new life and healing, through increase of faith in the promises of God. Come and celebrate with those among us who need our prayers and our presence that the healing work of Jesus might be complete.

MASS AT HOPE VILLAGE
On Wednesday, March 21 at 10:30am we will gather together at Hope Village Retirement Complex to celebrate Mass with our parish family members who live at the Retirement complex. All parishioners are invited. They would love to see new faces and have a chance to visit with you. Please remember there is additional parking located behind the main building.

Reflecting on the Gospel

stJos

Last week, repent or perish. This week, repent and feast. In this parable of the Prodigal Son we have an example of someone who does repent and enjoys the fruits of repentance: a welcome home, a loving embrace of the father, and a feast. Both sons hurt their father: the younger son takes his inheritance and leaves the family; the elder son refuses to celebrate when his brother returns. Toward each the father shows compassion and solicitude by inviting both to the feast. Neither the self-centeredness of the one nor the self-righteousness of the other diminishes the father’s love for them. Entering the feast depends on their choice to repent. Sometimes an outside catalyst brings us to repentance and conversion. For the younger son, the choice to repent is sparked by necessity; he is humbled to seek forgiveness and accept a new relationship with his father. The father, however, forgives him and restores him to his former relationship as son. The generosity of the father, then, goes well beyond the tangible gifts he bestows upon his son. The surprise of the parable is that the father expresses his forgiveness by restoring the younger son to their former relationship. The elder son, however, replies to his father’s pleas to come to the feast that he has “all these years served” him. Here is the problem: the elder son served the father; there is no sense in the parable that the elder son ever responded to the father’s constant generosity out of a filial, loving relationship. The elder son also needed to heal a relationship with this father that had gone awry, but he remained deaf to his father’s compassionate overtures: he clung to his self-righteousness. This Sunday’s gospel is probably one of the most familiar to us; our Lenten challenge is to hear it anew and respond to the parable’s call to repent and come to the feast. Reconciliation is, indeed, a ‘passing over’ from famine to feast, from self-indulgence to self-giving. Like the father in the parable, our heavenly Father is loving and compassionate, always inviting us to his feast. This ought to give us courage to undertake our own repenting, no matter what our sinfulness. Let the feast begin!

LENTEN ACTIVITY FOR JR HIGH AND YOUTH MINISTRY
The Lenten activity for the Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is a collection for our soldiers in Iraq to make friends with the locals. One way they do this is by having little care packages for the kids to help them be comfortable with the soldiers. Spc. Adamm Creel is asking for our community to donate little care packages for the children. The gifts must be non religious and non political. Suggestions for things to bring are: small pads of paper, tooth brushes, small containers of toothpaste, shampoo, hand lotion, etc. also energy bars, breakfast bars or pencils, life savers, match box cars ( these are very popular), clear cellophane children’s party bags to put the items into. Contact Sue Unger for more information.

What Happening

BENEDICTION
Due to the Penance service Thursday, March 22, Benediction for Eucharistic Adoration will be at 6:00pm.

FRIDAY NIGHT LENTEN SOUP SUPPER AND STATIONS OF THE CROSS
This Friday your Hosts will be: The RCIA Team - Soup Supper and the Friday Night Prayer Group - Stations of the Cross. The Friday Night Prayer Group is our Spanish Prayer Group. Our Stations of the Cross will be presented in Spanish. For those of us who do not speak the Spanish language it’s a good opportunity to participate in one of our more popular faith traditions as experienced in our neighboring culture.

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES ARE STILL IN NEED OF YOUR PARTICIPATION
Our recent training for new Eucharistic Ministers saw a wonderful addition of 9 new EM’s for our Liturgical Ministers. However, only 1 of our new EM’s is a regular attendant at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass. In order to ease the ministerial burden on those EM’s who serve at the 11:00 am Mass we need 6 more NEW EM’s. If you heard the call before and just weren’t certain if the Lord - or Fr. John, or Sara - was REALLY speaking to you, listen again. Is this a ministry with your name on it? Does the Eucharist call to your heart in a special way? Are you desiring to grow in your love and understanding of what it means to BE Bread for the Life of the World? If the Lord is calling on you are you ready to join in the response of Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, and Mary; “Here I am Lord, I come to do your will.” For more information call Sara @ 503-266-9411.

MEN’S CLUB NEWS

THANK YOU!
The Norbert Meyer family would like to thank Father John, Father Ed, the Eucharistic Ministers and everyone else who helped us through his long and difficult illness.

Please call Sheila Kessler at 503-694-5188 or Francis Parker, 503-351-6903 with any questions. We are in need of small $ donations, physical labor (painting, furniture moving around, etc) and updated furniture pieces. The main bathroom is almost complete and a new donated dining room set has arrived. Thank you!

The Parish Office is looking for someone in the parish who does stained glass work. We have a beautiful piece that has a few bits of broken colored glass as well as clear glass that need to be repaired. Please contact Debbie in the Parish Office if interested.
