THOSE THAT SOW IN TEARS, WILL REAP REJOICING

Father in heaven,
the love of your son
led him to accept the suffering of the cross
that his brothers might glory in new life.
Change our selfishness into self-giving.
Help us to embrace the world you have given us,
that we may transform the darkness of its pain
into the life and joy of Easter.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.

IN SYMPATHY . .
Please keep in your prayers Karen Brough, the daughter of Marian Meyers who passed away this week. Marian also lost her beloved husband Norbert Meyers the beginning of March. Please continue to keep all our parishioners who have passed away in your thoughts and prayers.

THIS SUNDAY A SPECIAL CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Sunday, March 25, 2007 Fr. John will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The second Sacrament of Healing, the Anointing of the Sick, is for anyone who is sick, whether physically or suffering severe mental or emotional anxiety, preparing to go into surgery, or for the elderly. The effects of the Anointing of the Sick are: giving strength during times of sickness and pain, calling to the attention of the community of believers the need of extra care and support during times of illness, and providing comfort and the assurance of the healing presence of Jesus with us in all things. We will have a brief liturgy followed by individual anointing’s beginning at 10:00 am on Sunday morning. This wonderful sacrament is to bring about new life and healing, through increase of faith in the promises of God. Come and celebrate with those among us who need our prayers and our presence that the healing work of Jesus might be complete.

Reflecting on the Gospel

prachin

It was at a religious education conference a good number of years ago attended by almost a thousand people, Mother Teresa was the featured afternoon speaker. About a half hour before the event, people began to congregate in the auditorium, milling about meeting colleagues and sharing shop talk. The room was noisy and full of people going this way and that. At about ten minutes before the hour, the chairperson walked out on the stage to adjust the microphone. Unbeknownst to him, Mother Teresa followed him out. Immediately, as if by some unsounded signal, the entire auditorium became totally still and silent. All eyes turned to the stage in one sweeping movement. The air was electric. This tiny woman’s presence was so intense that hundreds of people were immediately affected. The encounter was overwhelming. If this tiny woman can effect so much in so many, what would an overwhelming encounter with Jesus effect? The center of this gospel is not the woman or her sin of adultery, but a personal encounter with Jesus. Encountering Jesus always exposes the truth-both the woman and the crowd learn the truth about their own sin. The crowd was led to the truth that they are more like the woman in also being sinners than they would want to admit. The woman is led to the truth of her own sinfulness. They and we are not that different: we are all sinners who need to encounter Jesus, ask the truth about ourselves, and receive Jesus’ mercy. Encounter with Chris is the occasion for changing both the condemners and the condemned. These encounters with Jesus bring about two changes: those who are willing to condemn no longer condemn (“they went away”), and the one condemned is no longer condemned (“neither do I condemn you”). Although at face value this gospel doesn’t seem to deal with the repentance motif of the last two Sundays, at closer look it does. For repentance means turning away from sinful behavior because one has encountered the One who is the author of truth and holiness. It is this encounter with Jesus that enables repentance in our lives.

MORE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

TAMALE PROBLEM
A couple of weeks ago the Spanish Youth Group made tamales. Something went wrong in the process and they were not able to sell them. They were raising funds for a retreat they are attending this weekend. If you would like to donate to help cover the cost of these young people’s retreat, please drop an envelope in the Parish Collection marked for Spanish Youth Group or contact Sue Unger.

LENTEN ACTIVITY FOR JR HIGH AND YOUTH MINISTRY
The Lenten activity for the Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is a collection for our soldiers in Iraq to make friends with the locals. One way they do this is by having little care packages for the kids to help them be comfortable with the soldiers. Spc. Adamm Creel is asking for our community to donate little care packages for the children. The gifts must be non religious and non political. Suggestions for things to bring are: small pads of paper, tooth brushes, small containers of toothpaste, shampoo, hand lotion, etc. also energy bars, breakfast bars or pencils, life savers, match box cars ( these are very popular), clear cellophane children’s party bags to put the items into. Contact Sue Unger for more information.

GENERATIONS OF FAITH
Thank you to all the volunteers that made this parish project happen. Your help made it possible for many people to enjoy and understand more about their faith. We hope to grow as we do more of these activities for the whole parish to enjoy.

NET RETREAT
Fun was had by all for the two Net Retreats that happened in the past week. I want to thank all the volunteers that chaperoned, drove, served, cooked and housed the young adults. Your time and energy were appreciated.

MISSING PLATE
Did anyone find a dark blue plate with a cake on it in the refrigerator of the old kitchen? It was in the refrigerator on February 10th. This plate was a recent gift to Sue Unger and she would really like it back. Please contact Sue Unger

ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT

We are coming to the end of the Religious Education season. In the next few weeks we will be preparing for the Religious Education crowning of Mary on May 6th for both English and Spanish and the final celebrations of a luncheon and games. If you can volunteer or donate for these activities or have general questions contact Sue Unger.

Youth Ministry is currently working on projects including preparing for some youth that are planning to go to Mexico for a service project, Vocation presentation on April 18th. We will be having class on April 4 for both Jr High and Sr High to concentrate on the Triduum and the Passion of Christ( This is a change in the schedule). The Mexican Trip group will meet Tuesday April 3rd at 7 pm in the Parish Hall. We now have a completed group to go to Mexico. For the Mexican service project we have decided to fly to San Diego and drive into Mexico from there. We will be doing various fundraisers for this project throughout the next few months. This will be an hour meeting. For more information contact Sue Unger in the parish office or email at stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

MEXICO FUNDRAISERS
The youth are planning several fundraisers to support their trip to Mexico. On April 14 look for a night of parish fun. We will start off with a fantastic Spaghetti Dinner with all the trimmings. Tickets will be sold following mass on April 1st. With dinner we will have entertainment from some local music groups. Following dinner we will have bingo available for people to play and there will be a silent auction for groups of participants to work four hours this spring in your yard. Hire teens and a chaperone to get your yard in the best shape it can be. There will be a garage sale in June so save those pesky items you are dying to get rid of and some one can’t wait to get. We will start collecting for the garage sale items in early May. There will also be a car wash in the near future watch the bulletin for all the action. The youth are working hard to raise the funds for their trip. Please help support them.

NO COFFEE AND DONUTS THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 25TH DUE TO SPRING BREAK

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES ARE STILL IN NEED OF YOUR PARTICIPATION
Our recent training for new Eucharistic Ministers saw a wonderful addition of 9 new EM’s for our Liturgical Ministers. However, only 1 of our new EM’s is a regular attendant at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass. In order to ease the ministerial burden on those EM’s who serve at the 11:00 am Mass we need 6 more NEW EM’s. If you heard the call before and just weren’t certain if the Lord - or Fr. John, or Sara - was REALLY speaking to you, listen again. Is this a ministry with your name on it? Does the Eucharist call to your heart in a special way? Are you desiring to grow in your love and understanding of what it means to BE Bread for the Life of the World? If the Lord is calling on you are you ready to join in the response of Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, and Mary; “Here I am Lord, I come to do your will.” For more information call Sara @ 503-266-9411.

HOLY WEEK REHEARSALS
Rehearsals for Holy Thursday Mass and Good Friday Service are scheduled for Tuesday, April 3 at 7:30pm. If you are an altar server for either Mass or the lectors scheduled for Good Friday you are required to be at this rehearsal. Rehearsal for the Easter Vigil is scheduled for Wednesday, April 4 at 6:30pm If you are an altar server, a lector or a catechumen preparing for the Rites of Initiation you are required to be at this rehearsal.

THE CHRISM MASS
The Chrism Mass is Monday, April 2 at 7pm at the Cathedral in Portland. The blessing of the Holy Oils used In parishes throughout the Archdiocese for the coming year takes place at this Mass. If you have never attended an Archdiocesan Mass, this is one worth going to. The Cathedral is located at NW 18th Stree off of W. Burnside.

SPECIAL THANK YOU
Thank you to Fr. John, the Staff and parish members for all your prayers and well wishes the past few weeks. My sister Lan’s surgery to remove the brain tumor was a success and we pray for a smooth recovery. The entire Nguyen Family wishes to Thank everybody for their kind thoughts and support through this time. We are truly Blessed!
