Reflecting on the Gospel

jescru

This Sunday is the sixth and last Sunday of Lent, and it begins the most solemn of all weeks in the entire liturgical year. We begin this week with a proclamation of the Passion. When we hear this gospel proclamation, we tend to be most mindful of all the suffering Jesus endured. Our human experience of suffering is that we become more focused on ourselves: how to relieve or minimize the pain or difficult situation. Our own needs come first because they are of immediate concern. This is not necessarily a selfish response, but a natural one. Jesus, on the other hand, even in his hour of greatest need and suffering still reaches out to those in need around him. Even at this time he still musters the strength and love and compassion to care for others. Even in this hour of need he shows us how our Lenten penance must be undertaken and where it leads-beyond penance to reaching out to others. Luke’s Passion thus reminds us that the Passion also proclaims Jesus’ ultimate self-giving ministry for others. Though Jesus is facing his own death, his gaze and concern are always directed to those around him: affirming his disciples, healing the man with the severed ear, comforting the women of Jerusalem, forgiving his executioners, saving the repentant thief. In his darkest hour, Jesus’ identity as compassionate Savior shines most brightly. Already in his suffering and death Jesus is showing us that the very dying includes life-giving to others. The first reading illustrates this point most profoundly, for Isaiah’s prophecy finds its fulfillment in Jesus: it not only describes his suffering but also his concern for others in the midst of suffering, “speaking to the weary a word” of comfort. Jesus’ concern for others in the midst of suffering speaks not only of his own startling self-giving, but also of the startling value of the needy person. Even when suffering Jesus loves the other so much! Such is the care modeled by our Savior. Such is the life of his disciples.

MORE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

TAMALE PROBLEM
A couple of weeks ago the Spanish Youth Group made tamales. Something went wrong in the process and they were not able to sell them. They were raising funds for a retreat they are attending this weekend. If you would like to donate to help cover the cost of these young people’s retreat, please drop an envelope in the Parish Collection marked for Spanish Youth Group or contact Sue Unger.

LENTEN ACTIVITY FOR JR HIGH AND YOUTH MINISTRY
The Lenten activity for the Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is a collection for our soldiers in Iraq to make friends with the locals. One way they do this is by having little care packages for the kids to help them be comfortable with the soldiers. Spc. Adamm Creel is asking for our community to donate little care packages for the children. The gifts must be non religious and non political. Suggestions for things to bring are: small pads of paper, tooth brushes, small containers of toothpaste, shampoo, hand lotion, etc. also energy bars, breakfast bars or pencils, life savers, match box cars ( these are very popular), clear cellophane children’s party bags to put the items into. Contact Sue Unger for more information.

GENERATIONS OF FAITH
Thank you to all the volunteers that made this parish project happen. Your help made it possible for many people to enjoy and understand more about their faith. We hope to grow as we do more of these activities for the whole parish to enjoy.

NET RETREAT
Fun was had by all for the two Net Retreats that happened in the past week. I want to thank all the volunteers that chaperoned, drove, served, cooked and housed the young adults. Your time and energy were appreciated.

MISSING PLATE
Did anyone find a dark blue plate with a cake on it in the refrigerator of the old kitchen? It was in the refrigerator on February 10th. This plate was a recent gift to Sue Unger and she would really like it back. Please contact Sue Unger

ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT
Hop on down to Marquis at Hope Village for their annual Easter Egg hunt on Friday, April 6th at 4pm. (Egg hunt will start at 4:15p.m.). For children ages 0-10.

I sought the Lord,
and he answered me
and delivered me from, all my fears.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION LENTEN ACTIVITY
Religious Education is collecting personal hygiene items and cash donations for the food bank for the Lenten and Easter Season. By collecting donations for the food bank they are able to buy the food much cheaper than the average person but they cannot get personal hygiene items. We are coming to the end of the Religious Education season. In the next few weeks we will be preparing for the Religious Education crowning of Mary on May 6th for both English and Spanish and the final celebrations of a luncheon and games. If you can volunteer or donate for these activities or have general questions contact Sue Unger.

Our next gathering is at 7 pm on April 3rd in room 7. This meeting will cover chapters 4, 5, 6. Be sure your children know the stories in the book and can share their answers. Please bring your books to class and to the review. We will make appointments for the review of the book. The candidates need to have an idea about what the stories in the books are about, know the Our Father and have general knowledge of the book. THIS IS NOT A TEST. We will review the child’s book with them. You can make an appointment with me in the afternoons on Monday through Thursday or after 7:15 pm on Wednesday or Thursday. The review and the meeting is required for all candidates receiving First Eucharist (communion) this year. Contact Sue Unger for more questions.

CONFIRMATION MEETING
Our next gathering is April 1st at 4 pm. Your journals need to be completed at this time. Be ready to make appointments with one of the Confirmation leaders. You need to be working towards completion of your service hours and your saint papers. Be sure to check your schedule and see when they are due. Be sure you have the retreat in April on your calendar April 13, 14 - leaving Friday evening returning Saturday evening. YOUTH MINISTRY AND JR HIGH MINISTRY
All teens are welcome to join us on Wednesday night at 7 pm from 6th grade to High School. We have great volunteers that coordinate this program and make it fun and informative.

Youth Ministry is currently working on projects including preparing for some youth that are planning to go to Mexico for a service project, Vocation presentation on April 18th. We will be having class on April 4 for both Jr High and Sr High to concentrate on the Triduum and the Passion of Christ( This is a change in the schedule). The Mexican Trip group will meet Tuesday April 3rd at 7 pm in the Parish Hall. We now have a completed group to go to Mexico. For the Mexican service project we have decided to fly to San Diego and drive into Mexico from there. We will be doing various fundraisers for this project throughout the next few months. This will be an hour meeting. For more information contact Sue Unger in the parish office or email at stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

MEXICO FUNDRAISERS
The youth are planning several fundraisers to support their trip to Mexico. On April 14 look for a night of parish fun. We will start off with a fantastic Spaghetti Dinner with all the trimmings. Tickets will be sold following mass on April 1st. With dinner we will have entertainment from some local music groups. Following dinner we will have bingo available for people to play and there will be a silent auction for groups of participants to work four hours this spring in your yard. Hire teens and a chaperone to get your yard in the best shape it can be. There will be a garage sale in June so save those pesky items you are dying to get rid of and some one can’t wait to get. We will start collecting for the garage sale items in early May. There will also be a car wash in the near future watch the bulletin for all the action. The youth are working hard to raise the funds for their trip. Please help support them.

What Happening

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION - HOLY LAND COLLECTION
On Good Friday, April 6, 2007, we will take up a second collection for the Holy Land. From the daily news we all know of the challenges in the Middle East. Christians in the Holy Land urgently need our help and you can help fellow Catholics in the cradle of Christianity through your generosity during this special Good Friday collection. Your financial contribution will support the works of the Catholic Community in the Middle Easter and to protect the Holy Places and Christian shrines. Please give generously.

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES ARE STILL IN NEED OF YOUR PARTICIPATION
Our recent training for new Eucharistic Ministers saw a wonderful addition of 9 new EM’s for our Liturgical Ministers. However, only 1 of our new EM’s is a regular attendant at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass. In order to ease the ministerial burden on those EM’s who serve at the 11:00 am Mass we need 6 more NEW EM’s. If you heard the call before and just weren’t certain if the Lord - or Fr. John, or Sara - was REALLY speaking to you, listen again. Is this a ministry with your name on it? Does the Eucharist call to your heart in a special way? Are you desiring to grow in your love and understanding of what it means to BE Bread for the Life of the World? If the Lord is calling on you are you ready to join in the response of Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, and Mary; “Here I am Lord, I come to do your will.” For more information call Sara @ 503-266-9411.

CALLING ALL HGTV ADDICTS
Spring is here and a project is popping up! A few parishioners are getting involved in a facelift of the parish office area. Specifically the foyer. So if you or someone you know is remodeling or purchasing new furniture, give us a call. We are looking for a smaller seating area in the main entrance. Please call Sheila Kessler at 503-694-5188 or Francis Parker, 503-351-6903 with any questions. We are in need of small $ donations, physical labor (painting, furniture moving around, etc) and updated furniture pieces. The main bathroom is almost complete and a new donated dining room set has arrived. Thank you!

ARCHDIOCESE’S BANKRUPTCY PROCEEDINGS
You will soon receive a notice concerning a proposed settlement for the Class Action lawsuit related to parish property and the Archdiocese’s bankruptcy proceedings. Please read it carefully. The notice is also posted in the church building on the bulletin board. The notice can be found on the Archdiocesan web site: www.archdpdx.org/bankruptcy, and on the Committee for Parishioners web site: www.parishionerscommittee.org.

Christ Jesus,
though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
something to be grasped.
Rather, he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
coming in human likeness;
and found human in appearance,
he humbled himself,
becoming obedient to the point of death,
even death on a cross.
Because of this, God greatly exalted him. . .
Phil 2:6-9a
