SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
April 15, 2007

JESUS I TRUST IN YOU !

Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father and God of mercy,
we no longer look for Jesus among the dead,
for he is alive and has become the Lord of life.
From the waters of death you raise us with him
and renew your gift of life within us.
Increase in our minds and hearts
the risen life we share with Christ
and help us to grow as your people
toward the fullness of eternal life with you.
We ask this through Christ our Lord
Amen

Reflecting on the Gospel

ho1

Much goodness can come out of many years of persistent efforts and hard work. The Wright brothers’ first flying machine didn’t fly-it crashed. But they kept trying until they finally triumphed that day over a century ago at Kitty Hawk. One may begin work after college at the bottom of the corporate rung, but through persistence gradually work up to a high executive position. Someone may be introduced to another, fall in love, and through persistence become engaged, marry, have children, celebrate happily a golden wedding anniversary. In the gospel this Sunday we see the persistence of the risen Jesus in being present to his disciples. His presence brings the goodness of peace, forgiveness, and risen life. Through locked doors, despite the disciples’ fear, beyond their doubting and disbelief, the risen Jesus came and “stood in their midst” - not just once, but twice. Nothing deters Jesus from sharing his Spirit and new life with his disciples. He persists until he brings all-not just the early disciples and Thomas but also all of us today-to peace, forgiveness, and new life. Even in the glory of his resurrection, Jesus is caring for his disciples and calling them to a belief in him which brings new life and presence. The disciples believed because they saw the Lord. The early converts believed because they saw “signs and wonders”. We believe because we, too, see the signs and wonders of God’s presence. But now the risen Jesus continues to stand in the midst of the world through the “signs and wonders” worked by us who are his disciples. Our Easter alleluia isn’t simply a song on our lips during these weeks of Easter. It is a song in our hearts which spills out in the way we relate to others in being the risen Christ for them. Alleluia is the song of our lives which, like Jesus, brings new life to others. Alleluia is the song of our belief which calls others to utter “My Lord and my God!”

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
North Willamette Valley Habitat for Humanity will be starting a project soon in the Canby area. All members of the Canby community are invited to see how they might be able to participate in this special project. MORE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

MEXICO FUNDRAISERS
There will be a garage sale in June so save those pesky items you are dying to get rid of and some one can’t wait to get. We will start collecting for the garage sale items in early May. There will also be a car wash in the near future - watch the bulletin for all the action. The youth are working hard to raise the funds for their trip. Please help support them.

EASTER ACTIVITY FOR JR HIGH AND YOUTH MINISTRY

The Easter activity for the Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is a collection for our soldiers in Iraq to make friends with the locals. One way they do this is by having little care packages for the kids to help them be comfortable with the soldiers. Spc. Adamm Creel is asking for our community to donate little care packages for the children. The gifts must be non religious and non political. Suggestions for things to bring are: small pads of paper, tooth brushes, small containers of toothpaste, shampoo, hand lotion, etc. also energy bars, breakfast bars or pencils, life savers, match box cars ( these are very popular), clear cellophane children’s party bags to put the items into. Contact Sue Unger for more information.

I sought the Lord,
and he answered me
and delivered me from, all my fears.

Religious Education News

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION EASTER ACTIVITY
Religious Education is collecting personal hygiene items and cash donations for the food bank for the Easter Season. By collecting donations for the food bank they are able to buy the food much cheaper than the average person but they cannot get personal hygiene items. We are coming to the end of the Religious Education season. In the next few weeks we will be preparing for the Religious Education crowning of Mary on May 6th for English and May 3 for Spanish and the final celebrations of a luncheon and games for both English and Spanish. If you can volunteer or donate for these activities or have general questions contact Sue Unger.

Religious Education will be having a presentation on Safety for children in the classroom. Teachers will be reminding the kids of the importance of safety in all situations. Be sure to caution your children on staying with their parent or guardian when out and about and be careful on what information they give over the internet. We all need to be watchful for the safety of our children. Please be sure to thank all the volunteers that make our Religious Education run. Without the dedication of catechists and assistants the program would not be possible. We are coming to the end of the year so this is the time to say thanks.

We will be registering for Vacation Bible School on May 6 during our closing gathering for the year. Come and celebrate the end of the year and give appreciation to all those volunteers that work all year long to make this program work well for the community.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: DO IT FOR THE KIDS
Vacation Bible School needs you for this summer. Our time schedule is July 16-20 from 9-12 noon. Please consider the following volunteer needs: onstage play character King Xerxes for the Old Testament skit of Esther, a stunt person, assistants for classrooms and leading students from station to station, assembly production, cutting and assembly for craft area, secretary for VBS meetings, donations, decorators, catechists, babysitters assistants, artists, photographers, snack coordinator, volunteers to set up and clean up, we also know we need empty paper towel rolls. All volunteers that want to help with this project can attend the meeting on May 20th after 11 am mass. There are many volunteer positions open. Contact Sue Unger. Please take the time to “Do it for the Kids”

SACRAMENT PREPARATION
Our next gathering is from 1-3:30 pm in the Parish Center. This is a required meeting. Father will be speaking to the parents at the beginning of the session and we will need helping hands to make this work. For the interview be sure your children know the stories in the book and can share their answers. We can make appointments for the review of the book. The candidates need to have an idea about what the stories in the books are about, know the Our Father and have general knowledge of the book. THIS IS NOT A TEST. We will review the child’s book with them. You can make an appointment with me in the afternoons on Monday through Thursday or after 7:15 pm on Wednesday or Thursday. The review and the meeting is required for all candidates receiving First Eucharist (communion) this year. Contact Sue Unger for more questions.

CONFIRMATION MEETING
Our next gathering is May 5th at the 5:30 pm mass for a blessing at mass and dinner for families and sponsors. Candidates will process in for an honoring by the Knights of Columbus and a special blessing. Following mass will be a dinner for candidates and their sponsors and families. Contact Sue Unger for questions, concerns or if you are not able to attend any activity. 503-266-9411.

What Happening

RCIA - ADULT INQUIRY
Adults interested in the Catholic faith are invited to join us on Wednesday evenings in the Parish Center from 7-9pm for informal discussions on the teachings, worship practices, nuts and bolts in what it means to be Catholic.
Come and join us.

HOPE VILLAGE COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU
Recently, the residents of Hope Village Nursing Home section have made a request for your help. The residents would like to see visitors from St. Patrick’s Church who would be willing to come and visit awhile, read to them, help them write a letter or two or maybe share some musical talents. They really just would like to have some companionship and conversation. If you have the time to visit, just go by and say hello to any of the residents of Hope Village Nursing Home section. For questions, please contact the Parish Office.

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES ARE STILL IN NEED OF YOUR PARTICIPATION
Our recent training for new Eucharistic Ministers saw a wonderful addition of 9 new EM’s for our Liturgical Ministers. However, only 1 of our new EM’s is a regular attendant at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass. In order to ease the ministerial burden on those EM’s who serve at the 11:00 am Mass we need 6 more NEW EM’s. If you heard the call before and just weren’t certain if the Lord - or Fr. John, or Sara - was REALLY speaking to you, listen again. Is this a ministry with your name on it? Does the Eucharist call to your heart in a special way? Are you desiring to grow in your love and understanding of what it means to BE Bread for the Life of the World? If the Lord is calling on you are you ready to join in the response of Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, and Mary; “Here I am Lord, I come to do your will.” For more information call Sara @ 503-266-9411.

RELAY FOR LIFE
The St. Patrick's Women's Club is recruiting members of all ages, men and women alike, for a team to participate in Canby's American Cancer Society's Relay for Life to be held at Canby High School June 29-30. The Relay for Life is a "fun-filled, overnight experience you'll never forget" held world-wide to raise money for the fight against cancer. Relay members come together to celebrate survivors, remember relatives and loved ones and raise money for local research to eliminate cancer. Teams are invited to set up a camp at the local high school (although it isn't required that everyone stay overnight) and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team must have a representative on the track throughout the eighteen-hour event...because cancer never sleeps. During the event you will also be invited to participate in a ceremony of hope and perseverance in the lighting of the Luminaria where hundreds of candles are lit to remember those lost to cancer, fighting cancer, or those who have fought the battle and won! Cancer survivors and their care givers will also be invited to take part in a Survivor's Victory Lap to help us see the progress we are making in the fight against cancer. If you are interested, please contact Alison Fitzgerald or Mary Colvin - our next Q & A session in the Parish Center will be Wednesday, April 25th at 7:00pm. You may also join our team by following the link to the ACS Canby Relay for Life site from our St. Patrick's web site.
