Reflecting on the Gospel

rs2

The risen Jesus revealed himself to his disciples-again, and again. As in other appearances, Jesus is attentive to their needs, bringing their futile fishing expedition to a wildly successful conclusion and providing breakfast for the weary fishermen. These are tangible manifestations of his love and lordship. The Jesus we follow is both Lover of humanity and Lord of humanity. While it is always nice to hear words of love, far more powerful are deeds which demonstrate tangibly another’s love for us. Jesus most profoundly demonstrates his love for us in his death and resurrection. Then, to make that mystery concrete for us, he demonstrates his love in the simple deed of cooking breakfast for the disciples. We demonstrate our love for him and each other by faithfully loving him, following him, and feeding and tending his lambs and sheep. Love is not simply good feelings but the tangible caring for others. In the gospel the beloved disciple announces “It is the Lord.” The second reading gives us a vision of Jesus’ lordship over “everything in the universe.” Jesus is not only Lover, but also Lord and, as such, this Jesus is worthy of “honor and glory and blessing.” Jesus’ lordship is not exercised in having power over others, but in loving them and inviting them to follow him. Jesus’ lordship is expressed in persistent presence and love for others, now carried on by this disciples. With such wonderful detail and storytelling the Evangelist brings together recognition of the presence of the risen Lord, being nourished by him in a meal, and the mission to continue his ministry. Jesus’ risen presence is always a harbinger of abundance, whether of a great catch of fish or of the call to follow him. Peter and the early disciples were persistent in their discipleship of following Jesus and making known his Good News. The first reading relates how they did not “stop teaching in that name.” Peter is affirming before the Sanhedrin what he had previously denied. The love of Peter is manifest in the concreteness of continuing Jesus’ mission, even in the face of adversaries. This great Lover of humanity and Lord of humanity is gracious in calling us to be his risen presence for others. Of such is the Easter mystery: that we love and care as Jesus did.

What Happening

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED FOR 11:00 AM MASS
We are still in need of at least 6 new Eucharistic Ministers for service at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass. This wonderful ministry of service to the community offers numerous ways to grow in faith and understanding of the Eucharist and the Body of Christ. What does it require of me? First, that I be a fully initiated -Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist - member of the Catholic Faith. Second, that I be an active, practicing Catholic, someone who participates in the worship life of the Church, regularly and consistently. Third, that I believe that the desire of the Church that all members achieve “full, conscious, and active participation” is not for the guy whose sitting next to me, or someone “more worthy” than I am, but is an invitation for ME to get more involved, in my faith, in my Church, and a fuller participation of my baptismal vows. Fourth, that I am already AT the Mass at 11:00 am and am already participating in the Eucharist, perhaps I could be assisting with the distribution of the Eucharist as well. If these criteria fit you, perhaps the Lord is standing at your door and knocking, asking you to be his hands and his welcoming voice to others. For more information call Sara @ 503-266-9411, you’ll be glad you did.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
This Thursday Benediction for Eucharistic Adoration will conclude at 6:30 pm in order for the First Communion candidates to practice for the Sunday celebration.

INQUIRY FOR ADULTS HAS BEGUN
Inquiry into the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church for Adult learners has begun. If you know someone who is curious about the Catholic Faith, bring them to the Wednesday evening sessions. The RCIA Team meets every Wednesday at 7:00 pm in the conference room of the Parish Center. Currently we are discussing the Mass. All are welcome. Call Sara @ 503-266-9411 for more information.
