FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
April 29, 2007

WE ARE HIS PEOPLE,

THE SHEEP OF HIS FLOCK !

FIRST COMMUNION PRAYER
Dear Jesus,
through bread and wine at the Last Supper,
and by your holy word,
you gave the Eucharist to your church.
You transformed common food and drink into your Body and Blood,
and offered us a share in your life
in ways we still cannot fully understand.
Grant now that these young people
will always treasure the gift they have in you.
Give them the grace to be faithful to you
and to remain in communion with your church.
As they receive their first Communion,
the Bread of Life and Cup of Salvation,
make them always aware of the hope they have
for eternal life in you.
Amen.

Congratulations to the following First Communicants who will celebrate their First Communion on Sunday, April 29th at 1:00pm.

Reflecting on the Gospel

JesusShephard

We’ve all seen them-those saccharine statues and pictures of the Good Shepherd with a cute little lamb draped over this shoulders. These images may mislead us, steering us toward thinking that following Jesus is a sweet, pious, easy venture. But Jesus is both the Good Shepherd and the Lamb who was slain. As Shepherd, Jesus is the one who cares for us and leads us. As Lamb, Jesus is the one who lays down his life in sacrifice for us. Jesus is both Shepherd and Lamb. Encountering Jesus as the Good Shepherd opens us to his care and love for us. The Risen One remains with us and no one can take us “out of his hand”. The joy and delight of the Good Shepherd is a foretaste of the eternal life which is given to Jesus’ faithful followers. Encountering Jesus as the Lamb who was slain opens us to the cost of following Jesus. Yes, the voice of Jesus calls us to “follow me”. While following the Good Shepherd truly leads to “eternal life,” the way of discipleship is not easy. Discipleship always takes us through suffering, rejection, and persecution. However, no matter what the cost of following Jesus, we are not alone nor are we abandoned to our own resources. The risen Jesus is always present within us. This is the good news of these Easter gospels. Hearing Jesus’ voice and fidelity to its call involves us in the harsh realities of the world in which we live. As the first reading reminds us, we will meet with jealousy and persecution. Not everyone wants to hear a message of forgiveness and repentance, of self-sacrificing and surrender, even when there is assurance that this is the only way to life. Yet, the tumult of the world is not a sign that God has abandoned us. Jealousy, violent abuse, persecution, expulsions, etc. have always been part of our human condition. In all of this, Jesus is at “the center,” will shepherd us, lead us to “springs of life-giving water,” and “wipe away every tear”. No matter what we encounter in following Jesus, nothing or no one can take us out of this care. This is, indeed, Easter Good News.

OTHER RELIGIOUS NEWS

MEXICO FUNDRAISERS
The Garage Sale has been set for June 1 and 2 and possibly after mass on the 3rd. We need donations. We would like to have furniture, toys or other household or clothes items but no underwear or mattresses. They can be brought to the parish after May 6. Contact Rose Judge or Kelly Shields for more information. Please be sure not to bring things that just need to be tossed.

The car wash is scheduled for June 23, & 24th following masses. Plan to bring your car in and have it spruced up for the beginning of the summer months. Contact Liz Brown for information on the car wash. We are looking for help or donations to sponsor this trip for our youth.

EASTER ACTIVITY FOR JR HIGH AND YOUTH MINISTRY
The Easter activity for the Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is a collection for our soldiers in Iraq to make friends with the locals. One way they do this is by having little care packages for the kids to help them be comfortable with the soldiers. Spc. Adamm Creel is asking for our community to donate little care packages for the children. The gifts must be non religious and non political. Suggestions for things to bring are: small pads of paper, tooth brushes, small containers of toothpaste, shampoo, hand lotion, etc. also energy bars, breakfast bars or pencils, life savers, match box cars ( these are very popular), clear cellophane children’s party bags to put the items into. Contact Sue Unger for more information.

and delivered me from, all my fears.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION EASTER ACTIVITY
Religious Education is collecting personal hygiene items and cash donations for the food bank for the Easter Season. By collecting donations for the food bank they are able to buy the food much cheaper than the average person but they cannot get personal hygiene items. We are coming to the end of the Religious Education season. In the next few weeks we will be preparing for the Religious Education crowning of Mary on May 6th for English and May 1 for Spanish and the final celebrations of a luncheon and games for both English and Spanish. If you can volunteer or donate for these activities or have general questions contact Sue Unger.

Please be sure to thank all the volunteers that make our Religious Education run. Without the dedication of catechists and assistants the program would not be possible. We are coming to the end of the year so this is the time to say thanks.
We will be registering for Vacation Bible School on May 6 during our closing gathering for the year. Come and celebrate the end of the year and give appreciation to all those volunteers that work all year long to make this program work well for the community.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED FOR 11:00 AM MASS
We are still in need of at least 6 new Eucharistic Ministers for service at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass. This wonderful ministry of service to the community offers numerous ways to grow in faith and understanding of the Eucharist and the Body of Christ. What does it require of me? First, that I be a fully initiated -Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist - member of the Catholic Faith. Second, that I be an active, practicing Catholic, someone who participates in the worship life of the Church, regularly and consistently. Third, that I believe that the desire of the Church that all members achieve “full, conscious, and active participation” is not for the guy whose sitting next to me, or someone “more worthy” than I am, but is an invitation for ME to get more involved, in my faith, in my Church, and a fuller participation of my baptismal vows. Fourth, that I am already AT the Mass at 11:00 am and am already participating in the Eucharist, perhaps I could be assisting with the distribution of the Eucharist as well. If these criteria fit you, perhaps the Lord is standing at your door and knocking, asking you to be his hands and his welcoming voice to others. For more information call Sara @ 503-266-9411, you’ll be glad you did.

INQUIRY FOR ADULTS HAS BEGUN
Inquiry into the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church for Adult learners has begun. If you know someone who is curious about the Catholic Faith, bring them to the Wednesday evening sessions. The RCIA Team meets every Wednesday at 7:00 pm in the conference room of the Parish Center. Currently we are discussing the Mass. All are welcome. Call Sara @ 503-266-9411 for more information.

PARISH THANK YOU
Thank you for your kind support of the Retirement Fund for Religious Collection that was taken up on December 9-10, 2006. The people of this archdiocese have been remarkably generous throughout the years this collection has been taken. The parishioners of St. Patrick’s contributed $3,453.00. Our Archdiocese has provided $214,313.73 this year to support retired religious men and women. You are remembered in the prayers of these priests, brothers and sisters. May God continue to bless you for the support you have provided.

SPECIAL THANK YOU
Many thanks to the parishioners last weekend who “dug” into their pockets to come up with cash and checks to make up the $24.00 we were short on our parish goal for the 2007 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. After the Archdiocese completes their final report, we will publish the final results in a future bulletin.
