FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
MAY 6, 2007

LORD YOU REDEEM US,

AND MAKE US YOUR CHILDREN

CONFIRMATION PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
in the Old testament, your prophets and priests
would anoint the faithful with oil.
Through this holy anointing
you made known to them their mission on earth.
On Pentecost, at the birth of the Church,
you sent your Holy Spirit on the disciples.
On that day, the promise you gave of your Spirit
was fulfilled to the whole world.
As these newly confirmed go out into the world
preserve the gifts of the Spirit in their hearts.
May the completion of their initiation through Confirmation
help them fulfill their baptismal promises
as members of the Body of Christ.
Amen

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the following confirmation candidates who will be receiving the sacrament of confirmation on Monday, May 7th at 7:00p.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Woodburn. Archbishop Vlazny will be the main celebrant. All parishioners are invited to attend.

Reflecting on the Gospel

MY

Most of us get a pile of junk mail every week. Included among these glossy lures is usually a peck of catalogues. Open them up, and frequently sprawled across a product will be the letters NEW!-often printed in bright red, very large letters. The advertising ploy is that by simply being new, customers will be enticed to buy. Some people have a drive to “keep up with the Joneses.” Whatever the newest gimmick is, they have to have it. The computer industry is fond of telling us that our brand new computer is really obsolete by the time we get it home and set up. So how long does “new” really last? This Sunday’s gospel tells us that some new things last forever!
The “new” commandment Jesus gives will last as long as Jesus himself loves. Last Sunday’s Good Shepherd gospel assures us his love will last through eternity. In this Sunday’s gospel Jesus speaks of his impending departure but his love for us and his command that we love on another in the same way remain forever. There is another aspect of the “new” commandment besides its eternal endurance, however. This love has a cost. The commandment given in Leviticus 19:18 was “love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus commands us, however, to love one another as he has loved us. This is a “new love’ because it calls for the self-emptying of the slain Lamb. Our paschal transformation challenges us to make the norm of our love not self-love but the self-sacrificing love of Jesus. This is a demanding love because it will require that we die to self.
But this dying to self transforms the world! The divine love to which Jesus calls us produces dramatic results: “a new heaven and a new earth,” a “new Jerusalem,” indeed the making of “all things new”. This love wipes away every tear and lasts forever. Our Easter joy is not found in avoiding its costs, but in embracing its price for the sake of the new heaven and earth it promises.

EASTER ACTIVITY FOR JR HIGH AND YOUTH MINISTRY
The Easter activity for the Youth Ministry and Jr. High Ministry is a collection for our soldiers in Iraq to make friends with the locals. One way they do this is by having little care packages for the kids to help them be comfortable with the soldiers. Spc. Adamm Creel is asking for our community to donate little care packages for the children. The gifts must be non religious and non political. Suggestions for things to bring are: small pads of paper, tooth brushes, small containers of toothpaste, shampoo, hand lotion, etc. also energy bars, breakfast bars or pencils, life savers, match box cars (these are very popular), clear cellophane children’s party bags to put the items into. Contact Sue Unger for more information.

What Happening

A SOLDIER’S REQUEST-
We welcome home, for a 2 week leave, Isaiah Creel. Isaiah is stationed in Afghanistan and has requested donations of children’s backpacks for distribution to the children in the area of his station. Isaiah is stationed approximately 20 miles from the Pakistani boarder in an area which has been particularly hard hit by the Taliban forces, leaving the local population in sub-poverty conditions. While he, through the Army Forces, is able to obtain pencils and paper for the children in the area villages, the Army is unable to provide backpacks for their use. He is requesting donations of good condition backpacks which the soldiers can distribute to the children. These backpacks need not be new but they do need to be in good condition.
