Reflecting on the Gospel

bl

The import of Pentecost is that the Spirit enables us to witness, to proclaim, to forgive, and to bring peace. By Christ’s ascending into heaven and sending the Spirit, he makes his mission our mission. Thus, we are enabled to continue Jesus’ mission through the gift of the Spirit, “which is given for some benefit” to the whole community. Jesus gives the Holy Spirit so that disciples can take up his own mission: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you”. That mission is to proclaim the Gospel to all the world. It is the Spirit who transforms us into who we need to be to fulfill Jesus’ mission: the one Body of Christ created from diverse members and blessed with different gifts. The gift of the Spirit unleashes a twofold energy: the Spirit draws us into Christ and sends us out to proclaim Christ to the world. Jesus breathes on the disciples to take up Jesus’ work. Clearly, the gift of the Spirit is for the sake of Jesus’ mission: “so I send you. . . Receive the Holy Spirit.” Moreover, Pentecost is not simply a one-time event that takes place on Easter evening. Pentecost-the coming of the Spirit-happens each time we do the works of God and manifest the Spirit for the benefit of all. We consider it an incredible mystery that God’s Son took on human flesh at the Incarnation, ministered here on earth, and then died and rose for our salvation. Another great mystery is that God chooses to make us real participants in God’s plan of salvation and sharers in God’s divine life. Through the indwelling of the Spirit we are able to carry on Jesus’ saving mission, for the Spirit re-creates us in Jesus’ image and empowers us. The re-creation of the Spirit, however, is more than a share in Jesus’ risen life and the bestowal of gifts. When Jesus appeared to the disciples “on that first day of the week. . he showed them his hands and his side.” By those wounds the disciples knew it was indeed their crucified Lord who was now glorified. In showing the disciples his wounds, however, Jesus also reminds us that if we are to take up his mission through the power of the Spirit, we, too, will be wounded. Even Pentecost reminds us that the only way to share in Jesus’ risen, glorified life is through death.

PENTECOST SUNDAY
Topical: Veni, Sancte Spiritus

Sequence

I have what must now be a collector’s item. It’s the 1954 English translation of Pius Parsch’s five-volume commentary on the Liturgical Year. When published it sold in paperback for $2.75. It may read a bit archaic today because the liturgy has change a lot since then, but his quart-sized work remains loaded with good information about the history of the Mass as well as edifying commentary. And what I want to share with you are his reflections on the hymn called the sequence in the Mass for Pentecost.
This hymn (which is Latin began Veni, Sancte Spiritus) is very ancient. Indeed there used to be many such sequences woven into liturgies in the Middle Ages. People loved to compose and sing them. But after the 1570 revision of the Roman Missal, only a handful were retained. Now Parsch informs us that the sequence for Pentecost is no loosely contrived composition. It’s a five-stanza piece tightly built on the short phrase “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful,” which you will find located between the alleluias sung prior to the Gospel.
And how does this Sequence relate to that alleluia phrase? Well, each of its stanzas expands on one of the words in the phrase: Come-Holy Spirit-Fill-The Hearts-Of Your Faithful. Thus:

Come:
Come, Holy Spirit, come!
And from your celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine.

Holy Spirit:
You, of comforters the best;
You, the soul’s most welcome guest;
Sweet refreshment here below;

In our labor, rest most sweet;
Grateful coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.

Fill:
O most blessed Light divine,
Shine within these hearts of yours,
And our inmost being fill!

Where you are not, we have naught,
Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.

The Hearts:
Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour your dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.

Of your Faithful:
On the faithful, who adore
And confess you, everymore
In your sevenfold gift descend;

Give them virtue’s sure reward;
Give them your salvation, Lord;
Give them joys that never end.
Amen. Alleluia.

How’s that for taking five words and-as Jesus did with a few loaves and fishes-multiplying them to produce a wonderfully nourishing prayer? Perhaps meditating on this sequence can be your way of experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit today, as did the disciples of long ago-as a breeze sweeping through your soul, as a tongue of fire bright within your heart.

NEEDS FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Running a program needs lots of different kinds of things. For our final fun Friday we need door prizes. We could use store or restaurant gift certificates, tickets for movies, tickets for sporting events, games, balls, sporting equipment, MP3 players, Christian Rock CD’s, or anything that youth from 11-18 would enjoy. For youth ministry we are still hoping for a Wii system. Also we need someone who could repair our ping pong table. It has had a lot of use in the last two years and it is becoming almost impossible to use. We also would like to get a tool to help us with bulletin Boards. The Camera we have been using for the last 2 ½ years is beginning to show it’s age. We could use a new digital camera. The one we would like is a Nikon that has add on features. If you would like to help with any of these wishes please contact Sue Unger.

This ministry is a real gift for young families wanting to be able to fully participate in the Mass. For more information contact Angela Baker, Sara Dietz, or Sue Unger.

SUMMER YOUTH GROUP ACTIVITIES
We have decided to have at least one activity a month for the High School youth group. All teens from those entering into 9th grade to those graduating from High School are welcome to join us. We are looking at a beach or camping trip on the weekend of July 18th – 20th . Summer Road Trip for teens will be to Steubenville NW in Spokane WA at Gonzaga University. This program is to help teens grow closer to God and to other Catholic Youth from all over the NW area. We will be going on Wednesday, July 30th and returning late Sunday, August 3. The decision to go early and enjoy some social time with other youth ministry groups will increase our enjoyment but also our cost. This will cost $400.00 per student for 4 nights lodging, meals and entrance into to the conference and to the water park. Scholarships will be available and fundraising will help. We will be traveling by bus to increase the community time and for safety reasons. Please contact Sue Unger for more information. All teens in the parish will receive registration forms by next week.

YOUTH MINISTRY FUND RAISERS
One way to support Youth Ministry is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fundraisers. They are very supportive to our Religious Education programs. We also have a new opportunity through Safeway to get a percentage of their profit to support our Religious Education programs. If you shop at Safeway and have a Safeway card, St Patrick Religious Education can get a percentage of what you spend. You need to register your card through the company. You can call at 1-800-400-7878 or email at sbucher@escrip.com They will guide you through the registration. This can help support the many programs without the extra work of a fundraiser. Contact Sue Unger with any questions about the program. St Patrick Safeway group ID # is 163944105.

Youth Ministry is collecting cans to support the ministry. If you have cans please bring them to the Parish Hall side entrance next to the gym. If locked they can be left Sunday through Thursday outside the doors between the gym door and the hall door. If open please leave them just inside the gym by the door. Every little bit helps. Please be sure there is no garbage in the bags and that they are redeemable. Thanks for your generosity.

OFFERTORY REMINDERS TO BE MAILED
This week we will mail the Quarterly Offertory reminders to all parishioners who have made a commitment to the Parish Offertory Program. These are reminders only - NOT A BILL. This reflects the money you have pledged towards the 2008 contribution pledge program through St. Patrick Church. Many of our parishioners are away from the parish on a number of weekends each year. This can result in a substantial deficit in our Offertory collections. That alone can be a problem when it happens over many weekends. Just a reminder our pledge year runs mid October, 2007- October 2008. Thank You all who are so dedicated to the upkeep of our parish. P.S.: This money is used for the day to day expenses for our Parish Community.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPONSOR A CLASSROOM PRAYER TABLE?
Prayer is part of the fabric of our Catholic faith. Fostering a sense of prayer is an important part of the Religious Education programing of St. Patrick. An important aspect for our life of prayer is the establishment of “holy places,” in our homes and in our classrooms. We are in the process of creating such places of prayer for each classroom in our parish center. We are now ready to purchase the individual standing icons for each room. The cost for each 11" x 14" icon, which includes matching stand and shipping charges is $60.00. We have 14 classrooms and meeting rooms we are preparing prayer tables for. If you would like to sponsor an icon for a classroom contact Sue Unger or Sara Creel at the parish office. The icons still available are; St. Patrick, Sts. Peter & Paul, St. Mark, St. Luke, St. John, St. Vincent dePaul, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Blessed Juan Diego, The Good Shepherd, and the Twelve Apostles at Table.

APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The deadline to complete your application for The Knights of Columbus and Men’s Club Scholarship is this Monday, May 12. Please return complete applications to the Parish Office. The scholarship will be awarded at the Baccalaureate Mass scheduled for Saturday, May 31st at the 5:30pm Mass.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY GARAGE SALE
The Youth Ministry and Religious Education programs will be sponsoring a garage sale Friday, June 13, Saturday, June 14th 9:00am -4:00pm and Sunday, June 15th 9-12noon. This will help the program buy bibles and send the youth to Spokane for a Youth Conference. Also it will support Vacation Bible School. We will need volunteers. Please call Sue Unger at the office or on my cell at 503-349-7075 or Rose Judge 503-266-4482 or Janet Petersen 503-582-9666. You can always reach my cell phone. My hours vary in the summer but most of the time I will be here Monday –Thursday and sometimes Friday depending on my weekend schedule.

ADULT SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
We welcome all adults or young adults who would like to reflect on scripture to join our Wednesday night group at 7 pm. This is an opportunity to think about scripture in my life and how I can follow God’s lead in my life. No scripture knowledge is required just willingness to learn and share. Jerry Giger is the leader of the group. For questions contact Sue Unger.
