SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
MAY 6, 2007

MAY OUR LIVES BE CROWNED WITH JOY

Amen

Reflecting on the Gospel

tlp

At one time words were laboriously and beautifully hand copied. Manuscripts and books were rare and treasured items. This art was largely lost after Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century. Tradition holds that the first book printed by Gutenberg was a Bible. Today the art of fine calligraphy and illumination has been recovered in the creation of a very different Bible, the Saint John’s Bible, commissioned by Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. In contrast to today’s mass-produced books, every page of this Bible is hand lettered and illuminated. The Saint John’s Bible is a project of beautiful words, an expensive work undertaken out of love for aesthetics of the word and love for the word of God itself. This Sunday’s gospel makes an important correlation between loving and living God’s word. The connection is a simple one: “Whoever loves me will keep my word,” Jesus says. For us today, however, it can be a real challenge to hear the gospel as more than simply words, but as words we come to love, and love so much that they become a way of life for us-a way of life, moreover, which will make demands on us. Jesus is telling us that his words cannot by simply skimmed and then discarded. They invite a commitment of self which is no less than the giving of self which Jesus modeled. These, indeed, are “expensive” words! Keep my word,” Jesus commands. By this do disciple prove their love for Jesus. Lest the disciples feel disheartened or afraid, Jesus gives his Spirit to guide them and his peace to reassure them. The risen Jesus gives us the same command and the same gifts. Like the disciples, we are to make keeping Jesus’ word our way of life; like the disciples, we have been given the power to do so. Jesus’ words usher in new life and a new way of being, one where the risen Christ dwells within us: “I will come back to you.” Jesus’ resurrection redefines everything. Words are no longer jots on a page, no matter how beautifully or lovingly done, but a command to a new way of living the intimate indwelling of Father, Son, and Spirit. Here is what is wholly new: God dwells with us! This intimate union between God and humanity is made possible by Jesus’ farewell gift, the Holy Spirit. Indeed, in the spirit all things are new!

EASTER ACTIVITY FOR JR HIGH AND YOUTH MINISTRY
The Easter activity for the Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is a collection for our soldiers in Iraq to make friends with the locals. One way they do this is by having little care packages for the kids to help them be comfortable with the soldiers. Spc. Adamm Creel is asking for our community to donate little care packages for the children. The gifts must be non religious and non political. Suggestions for things to bring are: small pads of paper, tooth brushes, small containers of toothpaste, shampoo, hand lotion, etc. also energy bars, breakfast bars or pencils, life savers, match box cars ( these are very popular), clear cellophane children’s party bags to put the items into. Contact Sue Unger for more information.

I sought the Lord,
and he answered me
and delivered me from, all my fears.

A SOLDIER’S REQUEST-
We welcome home, for a 2 week leave, Isaiah Creel. Isaiah is stationed in Afghanistan and has requested donations of children’s backpacks for distribution to the children in the area of his station. Isaiah is stationed approximately 20 miles from the Pakistani boarder in an area which has been particularly hard hit by the Taliban forces, leaving the local population in sub-poverty conditions. While he, through the Army Forces, is able to obtain pencils and paper for the children in the area villages, the Army is unable to provide backpacks for their use. He is requesting donations of good condition backpacks which the soldiers can distribute to the children. These backpacks need not be new but they do need to be in good condition. For more information please contact Sara @ 503-266-9411.

PRAYER FOR MOTHERS

Dear God,
on this day that we honor mothers,
may we draw strength from the mothers who went before us.
May we remember Jochebed, mother of Moses,
who gave her son over to God’s providence
when forces that threatened him were beyond her control.
May we remember the mother of Mary, St. Anne,
who helped her daughter learn an openness to God’s will.
May we remember St. Monica,
who suffered an abusive spouse and her son’s poor choices,
but lived to see her child’s return to God.
Most of all, we remember Mary.
Though she watched her child suffer and die,
she also saw his resurrection and glory
and was in turn glorified by him.
Amen
