SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
MAY 20, 2007

MAY WE REJOICE IN THE MISTERY OF REDEMPTION

Amen

Reflecting on the Gospel

mat

Some reports claim that fully one third of North Americans move each year. Truly, we are “displaced persons.” More and more, it is difficult to claim roots. Extended family is rarely a reality. Being “at home” has taken on new and sometimes discomforting meaning-becoming more enclosed and self-reliant. In the midst of “displacement” the readings for this solemnity offer some security and grounding, some connectedness and hope. We can imagine that the disciples felt something like our modern “displaced person.” Only they weren’t the ones who moved, Jesus did! And there they were. . left gawking! The one whom they thought would restore Israel was gone! Now what?
The “Now what?” is simple-although Jesus “was taken up to heaven,” the ascension does not end Jesus’ work but inaugurates a new way of carrying it out: Jesus passes the mission on to his disciples and promises them the power to fulfill it. The mission and the power are not theirs. With Jesus’ ascension, the necessity of discipleship is clear. The ascension of Jesus prepares the way for the powerful and enduring presence of the Spirit in the disciples who continue his ministry.
True, the one in whom the disciples had placed their hope had ascended to the right hand of God. Interestingly enough, rather than leaving the disciples “homeless,” Jesus’ ascension leads them to grasp what being “at home” really means. They witness, pay homage, and are “continually in the temple praising God.” With Jesus’s ascension and blessing, after the coming of the Spirit, we are the new temples. We are the ones in whom the Holy Spirit dwells. We are the ones in whom others can be “at home.” We are the living presence of the risen Christ in our world today!

What Happening

CEMETERY CLEAN-UP FOR MEMORIAL DAY
A cemetery work party is scheduled for May 26 at 9:00am at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Please bring appropriate tools for weeding and spreading bark dust, including wheel barrows and shovels. This will be in preparation for Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th. Many hands make for light work.

MILITARY UPDATES BACKPACKS FOR AFGHAN KIDS
A very big thank you to all of you who donated backpacks, shipping monies and baseballs for the kids in Afghanistan. On Thursday I mailed out four boxes containing 100+ backpacks (and 6 baseballs!) to Isaiah Creel at his station in Afghanistan. The generosity and caring response of our parish community is a living witness to the dedication to the Gospel of Love we strive to live in Jesus Christ.

KID BAGS FOR IRAQ
Earlier this year a request was made from Spc Adamm Creel for “party like kid favors” that could be handed out to the children in the towns of Iraq when soldiers go out on missions. These “party favors” help to generate good will among the local residents and provide a small step toward cooperation between the soldiers and the many differing peoples of Iraq. Our grade school Religious Education children have been collecting a variety of items for these “kid bags.” With the help of the Jr High and High School kids who packaged the many items into party packs we were able to mail off to Spc Creel, approximately 160 “kid bags.” Proving once again, just how generous our parish community is!
On behalf of my sons, Spc. Adamm Creel, and Pfc Isaiah Creel, thank you for your support, your kindness, and your generosity. Sara Creel

RETIRED FROM THE MILITARY
We are happy to announce that Lt. Jennifer Sayles has retired from active duty with the US Navy and has returned home to the Portland area. Thank you all for the many prayers offered on her behalf.

ST. PATRICK’S RELAY FOR LIFE TEAM
St. Patrick’s Relay team will meet in the multipurpose room between masses today (May 20th) to begin making plans for the big event! We are still recruiting team members so if you aren’t already walking stop by and pick up a registration form.

BIBLE STUDY MEETING
There will be a meeting today, Sunday, May 20 at 3:00pm in the conference room for ANYONE who is interested in discussing the Bible Study/Catechism program for next year. We encourage and welcome suggestions.

DISHES
Please pick up your dishes that you have brought with food for funerals luncheons. We have acquired a lot of dishes that need their homes. Dishes remaining by June 1st will be turned over to the youth for their garage sale.

LOST
A parishioner has lost a crystal & silver rosary in the church this past week. The Our Father beads are filagree with silver and gold. This rosary is an antique and has GREAT SENTIMENTAL VALUE. If you have seen this rosary, please contact Debbie in the Parish Office, 503-266-9411.
