Many hands make light work, one saying goes. If, as another saying goes, two hands make better than one, then surely seventy-two are better than one! Jesus sends his seventy-two disciples out to the towns as if sending laborers to an abundant harvest. Jesus’ ministry is now being extended through the disciples whom he sends forth to do this work and thus announce that “the kingdom of God is at hand.” The Tremendous work of the too few laborers was to announce the kingdom of God by extending peace, curing the sick, subjecting demons. When the disciples return reporting the successes of their labors, Jesus reveals that the real abundance of the harvest is in having their “names. . written in heaven.” Jesus redirects the focus of the disciples from power over evil to the glory of dwelling in the kingdom. What a surprise for them and for us! Isaiah’s vision in the first reading uses different images to describe the same reality presented in the gospel. The effects of the kingdom (peace, healing, and subjecting demons) described in the gospel are described in Isaiah as comfort, abundance, and prosperity. Both readings envision a future of joy and rejoicing. In Isaiah, however, the future Is not yet a reality for Israel; but it is reality for the disciples. Isaiah’s wonderful future is being fulfilled in Christ. Then Jesus takes this even one step further. The disciples rejoice in the extraordinary feats they are able to accomplish. They come back filled with joy and enthusiasm. Yet Jesus admonishes them not to keep their sights on these things they’ve accomplished, but on a future glory which stills awaits them. The harvest is not what they did in accomplishing healing and casting out demons. The harvest Jesus sends his disciples out to bring in is the larger, even more abundant harvest of heaven. We disciples can never lose sight that we always minister with two hands: one hand is our selves, the other is God! Our ministry is about making present God’s reign, and the success is due to God’s giving us the power to do a wondrous thing: have our “names. . . written in heaven.” What a surprise! |
