Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary time
JULY 08 &15, 2007

OPENING PRAYER

Father,
in the rising of your Son
death gives birth to new life.
The sufferings he endured restored hope to
a fallen world.
Let sin never ensnare us
with empty promises of passing joy.
Make us one with you always,
so that our joy may be holy,
and our love may give life.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Reflecting on the Gospel

jd

Many hands make light work, one saying goes. If, as another saying goes, two hands make better than one, then surely seventy-two are better than one! Jesus sends his seventy-two disciples out to the towns as if sending laborers to an abundant harvest. Jesus’ ministry is now being extended through the disciples whom he sends forth to do this work and thus announce that “the kingdom of God is at hand.” The Tremendous work of the too few laborers was to announce the kingdom of God by extending peace, curing the sick, subjecting demons. When the disciples return reporting the successes of their labors, Jesus reveals that the real abundance of the harvest is in having their “names. . written in heaven.” Jesus redirects the focus of the disciples from power over evil to the glory of dwelling in the kingdom. What a surprise for them and for us! Isaiah’s vision in the first reading uses different images to describe the same reality presented in the gospel. The effects of the kingdom (peace, healing, and subjecting demons) described in the gospel are described in Isaiah as comfort, abundance, and prosperity. Both readings envision a future of joy and rejoicing. In Isaiah, however, the future Is not yet a reality for Israel; but it is reality for the disciples. Isaiah’s wonderful future is being fulfilled in Christ. Then Jesus takes this even one step further. The disciples rejoice in the extraordinary feats they are able to accomplish. They come back filled with joy and enthusiasm. Yet Jesus admonishes them not to keep their sights on these things they’ve accomplished, but on a future glory which stills awaits them. The harvest is not what they did in accomplishing healing and casting out demons. The harvest Jesus sends his disciples out to bring in is the larger, even more abundant harvest of heaven. We disciples can never lose sight that we always minister with two hands: one hand is our selves, the other is God! Our ministry is about making present God’s reign, and the success is due to God’s giving us the power to do a wondrous thing: have our “names. . . written in heaven.” What a surprise!

SUMMER SPIRITUAL OPPORTUNITIES

THE GROTTO SPIRITUALITY PROGRAM SUMMER MORNING REFLECTIONS
“GOD’S DEVINE MERCY”
Saturday, July 21, 9:30am-12:00noon
Join Fr. Ignatius Kisse
l, OSM in developing a Scriptural and personal perspective on God’s mercy. *God shows us His mercy in Scripture, *How do we respond to this loving gesture? The morning will include prayer, reflection and discussion. Tokens will be provided for you to complement your morning experience with time spent enjoying The Grotto’s beautiful gardens and meditation areas. Please call 503-261-2430 or email spirituality@thegrotto.org if you are interested in attending this morning reflection. The fee for attendance is $10.

THE NEED FOR REST
The Bible says that after creating the world,
on the Seventh Day, God rested.
Rather than because he was tired,
God meant to model for us the need to rest and reflect
after a job well done.
During his ministry, Christ himself would withdraw
to a "Lonely Place" resting to refresh his spirit.
Today, we have more leisure,
but feel more stressed.
We have more devices to save labor and time,
but panic at the thought of 'getting behind.'
Lord, help me remember when we must rest, reflect,
and worship on a Sunday, or on a vacation,
and that rest is as needed as all other things in our lives
to do a good job for our employer, and for God as well

YOUTH MINISTRY AND JR HIGH MINISTRY
Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is putting on a new face for the new year. Our new names for these two ministries are Faith in Action (grades 9-12 formerly called Youth Ministry), and Journey in Faith (grades 6-8, formerly Jr high Ministry). For this new year we will be planning a monthly activity for the group Journey in Faith (6-8th grades) and Faith in Action (9th-12th grades) will begin to meet on Sunday evenings from 5:30 pm -7 pm so that more teens will be able to gather without practice and school activities getting in the way. For more information contact Sue Unger in the parish office 503-266-9411 or email at stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you would like to help out in Journey in Faith on Wednesday nights contact Sue Unger. We need assistants that can help with various projects that come up throughout the year. Contact Sue Unger if you are interested in helping. Volunteers are also needed to head up fundraisers throughout the year to help sponsor the different Religious Education and Youth Ministry projects and activities. If you would like to help we hope to have a few community based fund raisers that will promote community activity as well as raising funds for the programs.

MEXICO FUNDRAISERS
Our final fundraiser specifically for Mexico will be this weekend following all masses. The car wash and the 2nd collection were a great success thank you for all your support. We will be planning an evening of pictures and presentations of the trip when we get back. Watch the bulletin for the date.

RELAY FOR LIFE
The St. Patrick’s Relay for Life team would like to thank all who participated and/or supported our team in this years event. We want to especially thank John Meyerhofer for sponsoring our team (and showing up to walk a few laps). It was an incredible experience! We ended up with over forty walkers, from six years old to over eighty, and 5 survivors on our team. What a variety of experiences but everybody came away with so much enthusiasm that every one of them wants to walk again next year! As a team we were also able to raise over sixteen hundred dollars for the fight for a cure. We want to particularly thank the Knights of Columbus for their generous contribution, but each and every one of you makes a difference!

ATTENTION ALL LADIES OF THE PARISH
The Women’s Club will meet on Monday, July 9th at 1:00pm in the Multipurpose room of the Parish Center. Come and join us.
