MEXICAN MISSION TRIP
The mission trip group is leaving Sunday, July 22 for the Salesian Center in Tijuana Mexico. We cannot thank you enough for all the support you have given to make this trip possible. Now comes the hard part. We invite you to pray for each one of us as we open our hearts to God and learn about the call to Social Justice that we have as believers in Jesus Christ. Those attending are Laura and Mike Schmader, Molly Colvin, Liz Brown, Jesse Villarreal, Sue Unger, Elizabeth Cavender, Rachel Colvin, Tom Dasso, Jolene Davis, Brian Devlin, Ben Dillon, Nathan Gilpin, Teddy Hein, Megan Heintz, Liz Holmes, Tim Judge, Ryan Morris, Leslie Robert, Daniele Schmader, Matt Schmader, Kelley Shields, Michael Vu.

REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SACRAMENTS
Registration for classes will begin on August 25 and 26. All families with children will receive a form in the mail. Be sure to fill it out entirely and bring it to registration. Medical forms need to be filled out for each child registered each year. We are sorry for this process but it is required. If you do not receive a form, you may get one at the main office or from the vestibule of the church. Sacrament registration will be at the introduction meetings in September. A new policy will be in place starting Fall of 2008. All children wanting to receive sacraments will need to have registered and attended one year of Religious Education or Youth Ministry prior to preparation for sacraments. Contact Sue Unger at the office for questions or concerns.

Reflecting on the Gospel

mm

On a purely human level, this gospel reads like an ordinary family with two or more children. How many parents haven’t heard complaints from siblings about “He won’t help me.” Jesus responds to Martha’s indignant question with something Martha probably wasn’t too happy to hear: “Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” What, exactly, is the “better part”? The first reading sheds a positive light on the actions of Martha, for Abraham and Sarah behave much as she does in receiving their guests. In juxtaposition with the first reading, the gospel is not so much critiquing Martha’s busyness as it is calling her to a deeper level of hospitality. Both Martha and Abraham and Sarah go to great, lavish lengths with their hospitality. Why does Martha receive a rebuke and Abraham a son? The gospel demonstrates many expressions of hospitality: welcoming, listening, serving. While each expression is valuable, none is complete in itself nor an end in itself. There is no one way to be hospitable. Neither are all expressions of hospitality equal, which is the point that Jesus makes in the gospel. Hospitality in its deepest meaning makes possible a personal encounter of the kind that Mary is having with Jesus. Hospitality-genuine welcome of the other and surrender to the other-sets up the possibility of hearing the visitor’s message and facilitating the encounter; one critical aspect of discipleship is listening. Thus, the “better part” is listening to Jesus, being attentive to Jesus’ presence, responding appropriately. Abraham is totally attentive to the three strangers: he greets them and bows down in respect; he extends an invitation to remain a while, and then acts after he has listened to the strangers’ reply. In contrast, Martha is “anxious and worried.” She loses sight of her guest and gets wrapped up in her task, as well-meaning as that may be. Note that Jesus does not refuse Martha’s hospitality; he does not ask her to forget about the serving and come listen to him. The gospel teaches about surrendering to the Lord. Martha surrendered to anxiety and worry rather than to the presence of her Guest. What is the “better part”? As important as certain aspects of hospitality are, the “better part” is to listen and surrender to the presence of the Lord. Faithful discipleship depends upon these surrendering and listening aspects of hospitality. Faithful discipleship depends upon encountering the Lord.

Prayer for Freedom
Dear Lord,
so many today misunderstand freedom
believing that it is the ability to do whatever we want.
Help us always to remember that freedom, true freedom,
is being able to do what we ought to do.
That freedom, true freedom,
is not indulging our every want and whim,
but instead is the ability to rise above any desires
that are wrong, disordered, dangerous or excessive.
Give us the grace always to remember
that true freedom makes us the people you wish us to be,
that true freedom brings us closer to you,
and reshapes our world in the likeness of your kingdom.
Amen.

OUR PRIVILEGE, OUR RIGHT, AND OUR DUTY
As it is written ‘Even if these forget, yet I will not forget you.’ (Is 49:15):

Lord hear our prayer.

YOUTH MINISTRY AND JR HIGH MINISTRY
Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is putting on a new face for the new year. Our new names for these two ministries are Faith in Action (grades 9-12 formerly called Youth Ministry), and Journey in Faith (grades 6-8, formerly Jr high Ministry). For this new year we will be planning a monthly activity for the group Journey in Faith (6-8th grades) and Faith in Action (9-12 grades) will begin to meet on Sunday evenings from 5:30 pm -7 pm so that more teens will be able to gather without practice and school activities getting in the way. For more information contact Sue Unger in the parish office 503-266-9411 or email at stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

FAITH IN ACTION
On Sunday, August 26 the Faith in Action group is invited to end their summer with a splash. We are planning to go to Wild Waves with St Paul in Silverton. There will be a bus that will pick us up in Woodburn and we will travel as one group. This will be an all day event starting early in the morning until late in the evening. Wild Waves and Enchanted Village is a great amusement/water park in Federal Way. Registration will be sent to all high school students for St Patrick Church. If you don’t get one in the mail, you can get one in the parish office. Contact Sue Unger by August 6 to be sure you have a place on the bus. The cost will be $40.00 per student. Scholarships will be available for those that could not go because of finances. We will need chaperones to help that day. Participants will need to attend mass Saturday evening because there will not be time on Sunday morning.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you would like to help out in Journey in Faith on Wednesday nights contact Sue Unger. We need assistants that can help with various projects that come up throughout the year. Contact Sue Unger if you are interested in helping. Volunteers are also needed to head up fundraisers throughout the year to help sponsor the different Religious Education and Youth Ministry projects and activities. If you would like to help, we hope to have a few community-based fund raisers that will promote community activity as well as raising funds for the programs.
