17th Sunday Ordinary Time
July 27 & Aug 3, 2008

God our Father and protector,
without you nothing is holy,
nothing has value.
Guide us to everlasting life
by helping us to use wisely
the blessings you have given to the world.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen

WELCOME BACK FR. JOHN!
Fr. John returns from holiday to celebrate Masses on Saturday, August 2nd and Sunday, August 3rd. He will be back in the office on Tuesday, August 5th. Welcome Home Fr. John, you were missed!!

IT’S ABOUT TIME....for some more information!
What began, a little over a year ago, in response to a need for repair work for the furnace room, has become a plan for much needed repair and a bit of remodel work for our church building. Fr. John asked parishioner Dave Muck, retired plant manager for Boyd Coffee, to ascertain the extent and cost of repair for the furnace room roof. This seemingly simple task led to a more extensive list of needed repairs and updates for the church building. In light of this information, Fr. John further asked Pat Nibler, local area businessman, Ron Hostetler, long time area farmer, Jerry Giger, Deacon, and Sara Creel, Pastoral Associate, to prioritize the list of needed repairs. Dave was then asked to acquire cost estimates/bids for the necessary work. A “wish List” was added and Francis Parker, parishioner and interior designer, was asked to come and provide possible interior product options and their cost estimate. A year later, their endeavors have produced a plan for repairs, upgrading, and some renovations to our church building. Thank you Dave, Pat, Ron, Francis, Jerry and Sara for your energies and expertise on behalf of Fr. John and the community of St. Patrick.

UP-DATE ON OUR CLASSROOM ICONS
Thanks to our many wonderful sponsors, we have now been able to order the new classroom Prayer Table Icons for our RE building. Reflecting on the Gospel

j2

Let the Word of the Lord take root in you...

It seems we human beings are always searching for treasure. We spend billions of dollars on lottery tickets each year hoping to hit the jackpot. Metal detectors enable us to comb beaches and parks for coins and other possible treasures. TV game shows are ever popular. Our search for treasure isn’t necessarily an indication that we are unhappy with our lot in life; it is an indication that we hope for more. So it is with our life in God. We have already been given so much - salvation in Christ, the promise of eternal life, membership in Christ’s Body- and yet we know there is yet more to come. The promise of the treasure of God’s kingdom is nothing less than a share in divine life! This Sunday’s gospel includes three more short parables about the kingdom of God. So often these parables about God’s kingdom take us to the end times and judgment, as illustrated in the first two parables by selling all to buy the field or the pearl of great price, and in the third parable by separating the good and bad fish. A judgment motif gives us a partial insight into what God’s kingdom is: his everlasting and just reign and presence. Thus, God’s kingdom is not a place or territory, but an exercise of God’s dominion and will over all of creation. Moreover, the three parables describe different ways people find the kingdom-by chance, by diligent search, by careful discernment. Each situation we face in life requires of us a different, appropriate response. No matter which way we find the kingdom, two things are needed: first, the wisdom to recognize the surpassing worth of the kingdom when it appears and, second, the boldness to stake all on the kingdom. The gospel thus invites us to be wise and to be bold! The wisdom that Solomon requested and for which he is famous is one of the most valued virtues of the Old Testament tradition. Like Solomon, we must ask for wisdom so that we can recognize the great treasure of the kingdom of God when it appears. We need, then, an “understanding heart” so that we can be wise and bold about our discipleship, about recognizing the presence of God’s kingdom, and about cultivating grateful hearts for the great treasure God has offered us in Christ Jesus. There is no greater treasure than this: to have an “understanding heart” and to “know what is right.”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
Registration papers have been sent out. If you did not receive a copy of the registration papers, please contact me by phone or email (email: stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com. ) Registration weekends will be in August and September. You may send in your registrations at any time. Note that to mail in anything to the parish you must use PO BOX 730. Sacrament registration will happen in the Fall. If you are receiving Sacraments this year you must provide a baptismal copy at the time of registration if you were not baptized at St Patrick.

JOURNEY IN FAITH GROUP - JR HIGH MINISTRY
I hope you are having a great summer. Registration will be in the Fall.

FAITH IN ACTION (9TH-12TH GRADES)
For August the team decided to go to the fair. We would like to enter a float that can get us into the fair for free. I will send another note home to get permission forms to go to the fair together.

YOUTH MINISTRY FUND RAISERS
One way to support Youth Ministry is by supporting the Knights of Columbus fund raisers. They are very supportive to our Religious Education programs. We also have a new opportunity through Safeway to get a percentage of their profit to support our Religious Education programs. If you shop at Safeway and have a Safeway card St Patrick Religious Education can get a percentage of what you spend. You need to register your card through the company. You can call at 1-800-400-7878 or email at sbucher@escrip.com, and they will guide you through the registration. This can help support the many programs without the extra work of a fund raiser. Contact Sue Unger if you have any questions about the program. St Patrick Safeway group ID # is 163944105.

Youth Ministry is collecting cans to support the ministry. If you have cans please bring them to the Parish Hall - side entrance doors located next to the gym. If locked, they can be left Sunday through Thursday outside the doors between the gym door and the hall door. If open, please, leave them just inside the hall by the gym door. Every little bit helps. Please be sure there is no garbage in the bags and that they are redeemable. Thanks for your generosity.

SACRAMENT PICTURE INFORMATION
Information for the group pictures can be found at www.kkstudioconnect.com user name is genesis. First Communion pictures are also at this site.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
Thank you to all the volunteers and those who donated supplies that made Vacation Bible School a great success. We collected approximately $190.00 that will be sent to Heifer projects to help the people establish food supplies for themselves and their families. Your support and work makes this possible in your parish. We will see you next year.

AUGUST FOCUS:

PRESENCE

Throughout history God has made his presence known to those willing to see and hear him. Jesus promised that the Spirit would be with us to help us. Still, it is hard at times to believe that God is truly with us. We get caught up in the daily concerns of life and struggle to remember what we are suppose to be doing never mind thinking about God. There are times when we do things we are not proud of and console ourselves with the thought that “no one will know,” forgetting that God knows! When things are not going well and we don’t know what to do, we ask God to fix it for us and expect God to help us pass a test we didn’t study for or pay the bills when we spent the money on something else. We want God to make every thing nice and easy for us and when that doesn’t happen, we wonder if God cares and even if he is really there at all. God is there all the time. Our problem is that we don’t know how to listen and see his presence. We are waiting for him to speak to us but ignore his messengers because they come in the form of a stranger on a bus or a coworker we dislike. We want signs to point us in the right direction, but we fail to look at the world around us and see the signs of his love for us. For most of us it will take practice and we need to create reminders for ourselves. In years past, you could usually identify a Catholic home because there would be a crucifix in the living room and a holy water font beside the door. Little reminders that God is with us in our comings and goings. What reminders of God’s presence do you have at home, at work, or in your car? Talk with your family about things that would help you to remember God throughout the day and choose a place to display them. Try to say a little prayer as you begin each day asking the Spirit to help you see and hear God’s message for you today.

RCIA AND EVANGELIZATION We Are Ambassadors for Christ
The Fall Programing season is not far off and with it begins Inquiry Sessions for Adults interested in the Catholic faith. Now is the time to ask yourself, “Do I know someone who has expressed interest in my faith?” Perhaps you have a spouse you would like to invite to find out more about your faith life. Maybe YOU have been coming to the Catholic church for a long time and have just never taken that final step to fully become one with the worshiping body. What ever may be your situation, it’s never too late to take that step to learn more. Is God calling you to invite someone? Or to take that step on a Journey of Faith? St. Paul tells us in his Second Letter to the Corinthians, “So we are ambassadors for Christ; it is as though God were urging you through us...as his fellow-workers, we urge you not to let your acceptance of his grace come to nothing. As he said, ‘At the time of my favor I have answered you; on the day of salvation I have helped you;’ well, now is the real time of favor, now the day of salvation is here.” (2 cor 5:20a-6:1-2a). There are no obstacles too great for God when we seek him with sincere hearts. Need more information? Do you have questions? Call Sara @ 503-266-9411.

HOST FAMILY
A host family is needed immediately for a 17 year old Chinese Student - Cindy Lai. Cindy has been accepted as a senior at Canby High School for the 08- 09 school year. Cindy had a host family that has had a medical emergency and they will not be able to take her. If you could host Cindy for even a month till a permanent situation can be found that would be helpful. Please call Trish York @ 503-961-5372.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
Such advancements as computers and internet access have allowed us to accumulate knowledge and information at an unprecedented rate. Not all knowledge and information are equally valuable; a discerning heart is needed to distinguish what is of value from what is not. With so many goods at hand, it is sometimes difficult to keep our sight on what is our true treasure-being faithful disciples helping to make present God’ reign.
This Sunday’s gospel suggests that living the paschal mystery is less something we actually “search” for and more something we live, by responding to the great value we have already been given. If we are aware of our own dignity as members of the Body of Christ (given at baptism), then we can more easily treasure and uphold the dignity of others. If we are aware of the abundance of risen life already given us, then we can work in justice and peace to help others share in the goodness of that same life.
