Reflecting on the Gospel

ms

All of us have had the experience of being invited to someone else’s home for dinner. When the host and hostess are good friends, the evening is one we look forward to and is an enjoyable and energizing time. When the host and hostess are, perhaps, little-known business acquaintances, we might be more apprehensive, be on our “best behavior,” and find the evening more energy-draining than enjoyable. This Sunday’s gospel recounts a dinner Jesus attends “at the home of one of the leading Pharisees.” We might surmise that Jesus arrived there in a frame of mind different from one he might have had when invited to Martha’s, Lazarus’, and Mary’s home. At this dinner “the people were observing him carefully” and Jesus was “noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.” This hardly sounds like a relaxed, friendly meal! As is often the case in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus uses this social occasion to teach something incredibly significant about God’s ways. While at table, Jesus’ eye is on the “wedding banquet” in God’s kingdom where human expectations are reversed: the humble are exalted and the exalted are humble. At that same heavenly table, service to those who cannot repay is repaid by God in “the resurrection of the righteous.” Acts of earthly humility and generosity are met with heavenly exaltation and God’s generosity. Humility is, in part, knowing one’s strength and weaknesses and one’s place. But it is more. Humility is the virtue by which we acknowledge our status before God: we are “the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind” who come to God’s table because of God’s invitation and generosity. Thus Jesus’ remarks in this gospel remind us about our truest identity in relation to God. As deeply humble people, we come to God empty and open ourselves to God’s filling us with what is lasting. This reward-everlasting life at God’s messianic banquet-is ours if we but treat others as God treats us-we ourselves must bestow dignity and generosity on others. It is God who exalts us, not our own choosing or actions. It is God who repays us with the most unimaginable gift of all-everlasting life. Humility helps us refocus our limited vision and relationship to an enduring perspective which keeps our focus on God.

Prayer for Freedom
Dear Lord,
so many today misunderstand freedom
believing that it is the ability to do whatever we want.
Help us always to remember that freedom, true freedom,
is being able to do what we ought to do.
That freedom, true freedom,
is not indulging our every want and whim,
but instead is the ability to rise above any desires
that are wrong, disordered, dangerous or excessive.
Give us the grace always to remember
that true freedom makes us the people you wish us to be,
that true freedom brings us closer to you,
and reshapes our world in the likeness of your kingdom.
Amen.

OUR PRIVILEGE, OUR RIGHT, AND OUR DUTY
As it is written ‘Even if these forget, yet I will not forget you.’ (Is 49:15):
We in the Catholic Church in the Community of St. Patrick remember, hold in our memory, and pray for the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces especially Ryan Thomas Blackwood, Ryan Bridges, Lonnie Brown, Nathan Brown, Douglas Bower Jr., Carlos Bustamante, Nick Classen, Adamm Creel, Isaiah Creel, David Davies, Brad Dunn, Brian Dykeman, Bill Ellis, Adam Ferrell, David Hannon, April Kennedy, Mike Krzmarzick , Johnny Lugo, Alex Martin, John Molamphy, John Nguyen, Patrick Ross, Tarl Spencer, Leah Sundquist, Gina Thomas, Kenneth Thorpe, CJ Trillo, and William Walsh, Ivan Wilson, may they be servants of Christ through service to those in need, and may they be kept safe from all harm. Lord hear our prayer.

Prayer for Students
Dear God,
although you made Thomas Aquinas, the patron of students,
among the greatest and wisest of teachers,
even he needed to begin his journey toward you
as a student himself.
When we are tempted to neglect our education,
be it at school, work, or in life,
give us the grace to persevere in your lessons to us.
When tempted to believe we 'know-it-all' about anything,
gently guide us toward the virtue of humility.
And when tempted to teach others before we are ready,
lead us away from the vice of arrogance.
Make us more like you every day,
and help us always to accept your will and instruction.
Amen.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CATECHISTS AND VOLUNTEERS
Religious Education always needs volunteers. If you are interested I would love to help you find a space that would be beneficial to you and the community. All interested in being a Catechist (Religious Education Teacher) are invited to a workshop on September 9 following 11 am mass. We will be reviewing information on using your guides and finish reviewing the calendar for the year. Contact Sue Unger at 503-266-9411 or stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

YOUTH MINISTRY AND JR HIGH MINISTRY
Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry is putting on a new face for the new year. Our new names for these two ministries are Faith in Action (grades 9-12 formerly called Youth Ministry), and Journey in Faith (grades 6-8, formerly Jr high Ministry).

The Journey in Faith (6th- 8th grade) group will continue to meet on Wednesday night. For our first meeting we ask one parent from each family to attend the first session on Wednesday September 19th. We are working on a plan for a monthly activity. Be sure to add to your schedule the Archdiocese Youth Rally for all 6th-8th graders on October 13th in Eugene. Permission forms and information will be given out at the first meeting in September. We will need driver/chaperones to help us out on that day.

Faith in Action (9th-12th grades) will begin to meet on Sunday evening from 5:30 pm -7 pm so that more teens will be able to gather without practice and school activities getting in the way. For our first meeting we are asking that one parent from each family attend. We will have our introduction meeting on September 16th at 5:30 pm. Be sure to schedule in the Archdiocese youth rally scheduled for October 14th in Eugene. We will need driver/chaperones to help out on that day. Permission forms and information flyers will be handed out at our first meeting in September. For more information contact Sue Unger in the parish office 503-266-9411 or email at stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you would like to help out in Journey in Faith on Wednesday nights or Faith in Action on Sunday nights contact Sue Unger. We need assistants that can help with various projects that come up throughout the year. Volunteers are also needed to head up fundraisers throughout the year to help sponsor the different Religious Education and Youth Ministry projects and activities. If you would like to help we hope to have a few community based fund raisers that will promote community activity as well as raising funds for the programs.

MEXICAN MISSION TRIP
Thank you to all who have supported the Mexican Trip for our Faith in Action group. Our presentation was changed because of conflicting schedules. The presentation on the Mexican Mission Trip will be September 9th at 10 am in the auditorium. I hope all can attend. We will have a special treat to serve with your coffee and rolls during the presentation. Contact Sue Unger for questions or concerns.

REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SACRAMENTS
Registration for classes will be September 8th & 9th. All families with children will receive a form in the mail. Be sure to fill it out entirely and bring it to registration. Medical forms need to be filled out for each child registered each year. We are sorry for this process but it is required. If you do not receive a form you may get one at the main office or from the vestibule of the church. Sacrament registration will be at the introduction meetings in September. A new policy will be in place starting Fall of 2008. All children wanting to receive sacraments will need to have registered and attended one year of Religious Education or Youth Ministry prior to preparation for sacraments. Contact Sue Unger at the office for questions or concerns.

Sacrament Registration will happen at the first meeting in September. A child seeking First Reconciliation (Confession) and First Eucharist (Communion) must come with a parent to the introduction meeting on Tuesday, September 25th at 7 pm in Room 7 & 8 of the Parish Center. All candidates must be at least 7 years old to prepare for these two sacraments.

All teens seeking Confirmation will come to the introduction meeting on September 23 at 4 pm in Room 7& 8 in the Parish Center. One parent needs to attend to register and receive the information for the classes for this year. We will review the program for this year and the calendar. Adults seeking Confirmation need to contact Sara Creel for more information.
To register for a sacrament the candidate must have a copy of their baptismal certificate if they were not baptized at St Patrick. Contact Sue Unger for questions or concerns.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION
The service project for the beginning of the school year is to donate school supplies for St Patrick food bank. Each week many families from the Canby area struggle to put food on the table. When September begins, they have the added burden of buying school supplies, school clothes and fees to attend school. The Religious Education Program is supporting a collection of any

What Happening

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE CATHOLIC - RCIA
Do you know someone, a neighbor, a co-worker, a family member who has expressed interest in the Catholic faith? Our regular weekly meetings of the RCIA, Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults, will begin again on Wednesday, September 19. These meetings, which take place in the Parish Center from 7 - 8:30 pm, offer adults with questions about the Catholic faith an opportunity to examine their questions in a casual, relaxed, and friendly manner with other adults whose faith experiences have made a difference in their lives. Now is the time to invite others to discover what it means to be Catholic. Don’t wait for someone else to make the first move, invite them today. You may be surprised at the response you receive.

RCIA AND RCIC TO BE OFFERED IN SPANISH
The invitation to adults to come and learn about the Catholic faith through the RCIA has now been a part of our parish community for 10 years. In those 10 years we have witnessed numerous adults make a new commitment to Jesus as celebrated in the Catholic faith. We are now offering this same opportunity to our Spanish speaking friends and neighbors. Two new RCIA / RCIC - Spanish teams are working together to implement the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults / Children within the Spanish speaking community. As members of the One Body of Christ, you are invited to keep these new team members and those to whom they will minister to, in your prayers. God’s Word is for all people. The invitation of Jesus to Come and See is for all languages and cultures. Together we are united in the efforts to bring the joys, support and encouragement we all receive in the Church to others. RCIA - Español will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7 - 8:30 pm in the Conference Room of the Parish Center. RCIC Para Niños will meet on Sunday afternoons from 3 - 4pm in room 2 of the Parish Center.

The next RCIA - English team meeting is Wednesday, September 12 at 7pm in the dining room of the parish office. All Adult RCIA Team Members are asked to attend.

WEEKLY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Starting this Thursday, September 6, weekly Eucharistic Adoration will continue each Thursday starting at 12noon followed by Benediction at 7:50pm.
