Opening Prayer

Lord our God,
in you justice and mercy meet.
With unparalleled love you have saved us from death.
and drawn us into the circle of your life.
Open our eyes to the wonders this life sets before us,
that we may serve you free from fear
and address you as God our Father.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen

We invite all adults who would like to be involved to join us at 7 pm. Jerry Giger and Sue Unger will take turns leading the group. Contact either of us for information on the group.

9/11 MEMORIAL MASS

Reflecting on the Gospel

ph

We take much time and care over major decisions, for example, marrying, buying a house, having children, taking a new job. Nevertheless, each of these actions brings its own surprises, new challenges, and unpredictable costs which were to initially considered. We get married in loving bliss, and then the reality of sacrificing for the good of the other sets in. We buy a house, and then discover that it is a “money pit.” We begin a new position, and then discover that the learning curve is steep, indeed. In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus speaks to the crowds about calculating costs before beginning human endeavors-constructing a tower, marching into battle. As this gospel demonstrates, the same is true for committed discipleship-even if we calculate the costs of following Jesus and make the decision, more demands come our way. In following Jesus, no cost is too exorbitant. Nor is every cost predictable. In this gospel, Jesus challenges those following him to “calculate the cost” of discipleship. This cost is steep: hate family and one’s own life, carry one’s cross, and renounce all possessions. Moreover, these costs are not borne only once, when we make our decision to follow Jesus; rather, they are actually the daily demands of discipleship! Jesus teaches the crowds a pretty challenging message about following him: if our absolute priority is not Jesus and his mission, then we “cannot be his disciple.” Following Jesus comes ahead of family and one’s own life, difficulties, and possessions. Jesus is using pretty radical language in order to give us a chance to consider carefully what we do when we say yes to discipleship. Like so many things about life, we might enter into following Jesus with great enthusiasm and energy. But the cost of discipleship is something like inflation-it escalates exponentially! The more faithful we are in following Jesus, the greater the costs. Being a disciple is not something we can undertake halfheartedly or frivolously. It is a decision to be pondered and weighed. The cost is steep; like Jesus, we give our lives over for the good of others. Are we willing to pay the price? Every day?

PARISHIONERS NEED YOUR HELP:
“JUST BE PRESENT”

A family in our parish is looking for someone to come once a week and sit with her husband while she does some necessary errands. You would not necessarily be a visiting companion, just someone who could be present while she is away. If you feel you could help, please contact Debbie in the Parish Office, 503-266-9411.

LOOKING FOR HELP
The Coleman’s have a friend 19yrs of age moving to town in October. She is a new Christian looking for an elderly Christian woman to live with that she could help with house work in exchange for rent. She will be going to school full time in Milwaukie. She has a car to help with errands. Please call Becky @ 503-260-8025.

A returning parishioner is moving back into the Canby area and is looking for a 2 bedroom house to rent. She is looking in the Canby/Aurora area. If you would like to help, contact Debbie in the Parish Office, 503-266-9411.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION
The service project for the beginning of the school year is to donate school supplies for St Patrick food bank. Each week many families from the Canby area struggle to put food on the table. When September begins, they have the added burden of buying school supplies, school clothes and fees to attend school. The Religious Education Program is supporting a collection of any school supplies, from tennis shoes, back packs, to pencils, paper and all the rest to help out the families that don’t have the resources to supply these items. Please contact Sue Unger for more questions.

PRESCHOOL AND NURSERY PROGRAM
All children 4&5 years old are invited to sign up for the preschool program starting on September 16. The class will generally begin around 11am just before the 11am mass. The Nursery for children from 18 months to 3 years old are welcome to our Sunday Nursery. The first class will be on September 16th. All parents and children (pre-school and Nursery ) will meet in room 7 at 10:45 am before class for a brief introduction to the classes.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CATECHISTS AND VOLUNTEERS
Religious Education always needs volunteers. If you are interested I would love to help you find a space that would be beneficial to you and the community. All interested in being a Catechist (Religious Education Teacher) are invited to a meeting on September 9 following the 11 am mass. Also I am beginning to look at setting up a Children’s Liturgy of the Word. This is a process for children to hear the scripture in a simpler presentation so that they can understand the scripture in their everyday life. If we find 8 volunteers we will begin training right away and begin in December at the beginning of Advent. At the Catechist meeting we will be reviewing information on using your guides and finish reviewing the calendar for the year. Contact Sue Unger at 503-266-9411 or stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

The presentation on the Mexican Mission Trip will be September 9th at 10 am in the auditorium. I hope all can attend. We will have a special treat to serve with your coffee and rolls during the presentation. Contact Sue Unger for questions or concerns.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you would like to help out in Journey in Faith on Wednesday nights or Faith in Action on Sunday nights contact Sue Unger. We need assistants that can help with various projects that come up throughout the year. Volunteers are also needed to head up fundraisers throughout the year to help sponsor the different Religious Education and Youth Ministry projects and activities. If you would like to help we hope to have a few community based fund raisers that will promote community activity as well as raising funds for the programs.

REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SACRAMENTS
Registration for classes will be September 8th & 9th. All families with children will receive a form in the mail. Be sure to fill it out entirely and bring it to registration. Medical forms need to be filled out for each child registered each year. We are sorry for this process but it is required. If you do not receive a form you may get one at the main office or from the vestibule of the church. Sacrament registration will be at the introduction meetings in September. A new policy will be in place starting Fall of 2008. All children wanting to receive sacraments will need to have registered and attended one year of Religious Education or Youth Ministry prior to preparation for sacraments. Contact Sue Unger at the office for questions or concerns.

Sacrament Registration will happen at the first meeting in September. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE CATHOLIC - RCIA
Do you know someone, a neighbor, a co-worker, a family member who has expressed interest in the Catholic faith? Our regular weekly meetings of the RCIA, Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults, will begin again on Wednesday, September 19. These meetings, which take place in the Parish Center from 7 - 8:30 pm, offer adults with questions about the Catholic faith an opportunity to examine their questions in a casual, relaxed, and friendly manner with other adults whose faith experiences have made a difference in their lives. Now is the time to invite others to discover what it means to be Catholic. Don’t wait for someone else to make the first move, invite them today. You may be surprised at the response you receive.

RCIA AND RCIC TO BE OFFERED IN SPANISH
The invitation to adults to come and learn about the Catholic faith through the RCIA has now been a part of our parish community for 10 years. In those 10 years we have witnessed numerous adults make a new commitment to Jesus as celebrated in the Catholic faith. We are now offering this same opportunity to our Spanish speaking friends and neighbors. Two new RCIA / RCIC - Spanish teams are working together to implement the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults / Children within the Spanish speaking community. As members of the One Body of Christ, you are invited to keep these new team members and those to whom they will minister to, in your prayers. God’s Word is for all people. The invitation of Jesus to Come and See is for all languages and cultures. Together we are united in the efforts to bring the joys, support and encouragement we all receive in the Church to others. RCIA - Español will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7 - 8:30 pm in the Conference Room of the Parish Center. RCIC Para Niños will meet on Sunday afternoons from 3 - 4pm in room 2 of the Parish Center.

The next RCIA - English team meeting is Wednesday, September 12 at 7pm in the dining room of the parish office. All Adult RCIA Team Members are asked to attend.
