Reflecting on the Gospel

airterjun

The gospel for this Sunday includes three parables, all of them quite preposterous to a practical-minded, economically sensitive follower of Jesus. Who would go after one stupid, lost sheep and take the chance of losing the other ninety nine? If “rejoice with me” includes food and drink-and we can hardly imagine that it wouldn’t-then the shepherd is still going to lose some of his property! Or who would bother to clean a whole house for one coin? And if “rejoice with me” includes food and drink, then the woman spent more than on coin partying with her friends! Or who would “celebrate with a feast” a rascal son who has the audacity to ask for his inheritance early, squander it, and then come home to a party rather than to punishment and disgrace? This just doesn’t make sound sense. And that’s the point-no, it doesn’t! The reversal of our expectations comes precisely in the outlandish disproportionality of the three parables. Herein is a lesson for the faithful disciple: these parables speak unequivocally to us about the compassion and fidelity of God. In the first two parables, there is no concern for how the sheep and coin are lost: they are not culpable. All that matters is that they are found. By contrast, the prodigal son is culpable: he is “lost” because of his dissolute life. However, the father is not concerned with culpability. His only concern is that he has his son back, as though from death. The older son, on the other hand, has great concern for how the younger son was lost and refuses to come to the feast and rejoice at his return. The bitterness of the older son stands in stark contrast to the mercy and generosity of the father. So, too, with God who is more eager to welcome and receive sinners than to hold them accountable. Such Good News! Both readings describe the mercy God extends to sinners, whether the sin is idolatry, dissolute living, or refusing to forgive. Forgiving an unintended hurt is sometimes difficult for us; forgiving an intended hurt is till more difficult. Yet God’s response to sin, which is intentional, is always once of mercy, compassion, and forgiveness. God always seeks the lost. Such Good News!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CATECHISTS AND VOLUNTEERS
Religious Education always needs volunteers. If you are interested I would love to help you find a space that would be beneficial to you and the community. All interested in being a Catechist (Religious Education Teacher) are encouraged to call me to volunteer to help in the program. Also I am beginning to look at setting up a Children/s Liturgy of the Word. This is a process for children to hear the scripture in a simpler presentation so that they can understand the scripture in their everyday life. If we find 8 volunteers we will begin training right away and begin in December at the beginning of Advent. Contact Sue Unger at 503-266-9411 or stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

YOUTH MINISTRY AND JR HIGH MINISTRY
The Journey in Faith (6th- 8th grade) group will be meeting on Wednesday night. For our first meeting we ask one parent from each family to attend the first session on Wednesday September 19th at 7 pm. One of the new plans for this year is to have a retreat in the winter and to have Fun Fridays. Every 2nd Friday this will be a social for all 6th-8th graders of the parish. Our first one will be the night before the Archdiocese Rally for 6th -8th graders. . Be sure to add to your schedule the Archdiocese Youth Rally for all 6th-8th graders on October 13th in Eugene. Permission forms and information will be given out at the first meeting in September. We will need driver/chaperones to help us out on that day.

Faith in Action (9th-12th grades) will begin to meet on Sunday evening from 5:30 pm -7 pm. For our first meeting we are asking that one parent from each family attend. We will have our introduction meeting on September 16th at 5:30 pm. Be sure to schedule in the Archdiocese youth rally, it is scheduled for October 14th in Eugene. We will need driver/chaperones to help out on that day. Permission forms and information flyers will be handed out at our first meeting in September. For more information contact Sue Unger in the parish office 503-266-9411 or email at stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you would like to help out in Journey in Faith on Wednesday nights or Faith in Action on Sunday nights contact Sue Unger. We need assistants that can help with various projects that come up throughout the year. Volunteers are also needed to head up fundraisers throughout the year to help sponsor the different Religious Education and Youth Ministry projects and activities. If you would like to help we hope to have a few community based fund raisers that will promote community activity as well as raising funds for the programs.

REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SACRAMENTS
Sacrament registration will be at the introduction meetings in September. A new policy will be in place starting Fall of 2008. All children wanting to receive sacraments will need to have registered and attended one year of Religious Education or Youth Ministry prior to preparation for sacraments. Contact Sue Unger at the office for questions or concerns.

Sacrament Registration will happen at the first meeting in September. A family seeking First Reconciliation (Confession) and First Eucharist (Communion) for their children must come with a parent to the introduction meeting on Tuesday September 25th at 7 pm in Room 7 & 8 of the Parish Center. All candidates must be at least 7 years old to prepare for these two sacraments.

All teens in 9th grade or above seeking Confirmation will come to the introduction meeting on September 23 at 4 pm in Room 7& 8 in the Parish Center. One parent needs to attend to register and receive the information for the classes for this year. We will review the program for this year and the calendar. Adults seeking Confirmation need to contact Sara Creel for more information.

To register for a sacrament the candidate must have a copy of their baptismal certificate if they were not baptized at St Patrick. Contact Sue Unger for questions or concerns.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION
The service project for the beginning of the school year is to donate school supplies for St Patrick food bank. Each week many families from the Canby area struggle to put food on the table. When September begins, they have the added burden of buying school supplies, school clothes and fees to attend school. The Religious Education Program is supporting a collection of any school supplies, from tennis shoes, back packs, to pencils, paper and all the rest to help out the families that don’t have the resources to supply these items. Please contact Sue Unger for more questions.

ADULT SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
On September 19th we will begin an Adult Scripture Reflection group to reflect on the Gospels of the week. We will be using a resource called Quest which is a small group community resource that has prayers and reflections for the group to reflect on the Gospel and put it into practice in their lives. We invite all adults who would like to be involved to join us at 7 pm. Jerry Giger and Sue Unger will take turns leading the group. Contact either of us for information on the group.
