Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 07, 2007

Opening Prayer

Almighty and eternal God,
Father of the world to come,
your goodness is beyond what our spirit can touch
and your strength is more than the mind can bear.
Lead us to seek beyond our reach and give us
the courage to stand before your truth.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

IN SYMPATHY
Please keep in your prayers Kathryn Ash, mother of Clifford Ash and Richard Yeager, Father of Jim Yeager who passed away this past week. May we remember to keep all of our parishioners and loved ones who have passed away in our thoughts and prayers.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
Mark your calendar for this Sunday, October 7 at 12:30pm for the Annual St. Patrick Blessing of the Animals. We will meet in the picnic area for the blessing. All finned, feathered, and furry friends are welcome!

SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS
On November 3 our Parish will celebrate the joy of having Jerry Giger ordained as a Deacon. His ordination will take place at the Cathedral in Portland at 10am. If your schedule allows, it would be a wonderful gesture to be present for this significant honor bestowed on Jerry and on our parish Community. If you cannot be present, please be sure to keep Jerry and his wife Maureen in your prayers. I know Jerry will be a great blessing to our parish in living out his unique ministry. Fr. John

Reflecting on the Gospel

fa

When the disciples asked Jesus to “increase their faith,” what exactly were they asking of him? At first glance, it is hard even to see how Jesus granted the apostles’ request. He answers them by first saying that quantity is not really the issue and then goes on to speak about fulfilling everyday obligations. In following Jesus, doing dramatic things is not the issue. After all, the master does not order his servant to move a mulberry tree by faith, but to meet ordinary expectations-serve at table, wait on him, do whatever is commanded. The issue is to be faithful to the master and his commands. It is by such fidelity that faith increases. In fact, a reflection on faith does not begin with ourselves at all, but with the Master, with God. In the Hebrew Scriptures, Israel has faith because God has unfailingly made good on God’s promise to enact mighty deeds of salvation. Israel’s faith, then, is a trusting response to a faithful God. Faith is relational-we put our faith not in something but in Someone. God is true to who God is when God carries forward the plan for our salvation. We are true to who we are when we obediently cooperate in that an exercise of responsibility or obedience. It expresses and reinforces our relationship to Jesus. He is the Master, we are servants. When we hear the phrase from the gospel “increase our faith,” we might look to the first reading where Habakkuk cautions us against a notion of faith as merely giving assent of the mind. Faith is a way of life. Thus, the important thing to remember here is that faith is more a verb than a noun. Faith is expressed in the way we act. Here is the crunch: faith is truly extraordinary, not in the stupendous acts we might do for God and others, but in terms of the consistent and enduring choices we make daily to act righteously, humbly, mercifully, and justly, as well as being forgiving and reconciling-that is, to be obedient to all that Jesus has asked of us. Faith is a way of living, a way of expressing our true selves such that we act toward others like the Divine has acted towards us.

2006-2007 PICTURES
There are many pictures that were taken last year that families can pick up if they would like them. They are in the Main Hall of the Religious Education and are in a white basket. Enjoy the community of St. Patrick with a little memory.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CATECHISTS AND VOLUNTEERS
Religious Education always needs volunteers. If you are interested I would love to help you find a space that would be beneficial to you and the community. All interested in being a Catechist (Religious Education Teacher) are encouraged to call me to volunteer to help in the program. I hope to begin a Children’s Liturgy of the Word in December. I have one interested adult but need 6 more to be able to begin training. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a special liturgy for children to hear the scripture in a simpler presentation so that they can understand the scripture in their everyday life. If we find 8 volunteers we will begin training right away and begin in December at the beginning of Advent. Contact Sue Unger at 503-266-9411 or stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

If you missed the meeting last Monday, please contact Sue Unger to get the materials you need for your child to prepare for Reconciliation and Eucharist for this year. Registration is open until October 8 . Remember if you have a child in first grade that will want to receive Reconciliation and Eucharist in 2008-2009 they must be signed up for Religious Education this year.

SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Two weeks ago the Knights of Columbus and a number of dedicated parishioners took their time and energy to work on the grounds around St. Patrick Parish. Because of this our facility looks much cleaner. It is wonderful what can be accomplished when people work together. That ultimately is the goal of the Knights of Columbus. A goal that encourages those who belong to this organization to grow together in spirituality building strong family and parish life, protecting the innocent and welcoming the stranger. Our St. Patrick Knights of Columbus Council 3484 is looking for new members that would be willing to “renew our commitments to our church” to achieve these goals. Please contact one of our Knights if you would like to be one of us.
