Opening Prayer

Father in heaven
the hand of your loving kindness
powerfully yet gently guides all the moments of our day.
Go before us in our pilgrimage of life,
anticipate our needs and prevent our falling.
Send your Spirit to unite us in faith,
that sharing in your service,
we may rejoice in your presence.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Reflecting on the Gospel

stmat

How often do we not hear parents remind their children to say thank you when they have received a gift? What does this teach the children? First of all, it helps them understand that gifts are just that-freely given and undeserved. The thank you acknowledges that the giver has gone beyond expectations. Secondly, it helps them understand that giving and receiving a gift establishes a unique relationship between two persons. The thank you acknowledges that the receiver has accepted the gift and by so doing enters into a relationship with the giver. The gospel this Sunday is the familiar one about ten lepers being healed, but only on returning to give thanks to Jesus. As with any gift, Jesus’ healing them went beyond their expectations, was freely given by Jesus, and established a unique relationship between Jesus and the ten lepers. But only one acknowledges that relationship by giving thanks. The parable reminds us that it is not enough to cry to God for help; it is not even enough to experience God’s healing action. We are meant to acknowledge God’s gracious activity on our behalf by giving God thanks (“he fell at the feet of Jesus and thank him”) and worship (“returned, glorifying God in a loud voice”). Gratitude was not necessary for the healing . God’s saving activity does not depend on us. The gratitude was necessary, however, for God’s gracious deed to be acknowledged and proclaimed, announcing that God has acted. Gratitude helps make known God’s mighty deeds. Thus the ten lepers exemplify aspects of our relationship with God: acknowledgment of need, obedience, and reception of devine mercy. The Samaritan leper demonstrates another aspect of this relationship: only when he returns to glorify God and thank Jesus, does Jesus reveal that he has, in fact, been saved. For us, as for the Samaritan leper, salvation is revealed and experienced in worship and thanksgiving. Salvation, worship, and thanksgiving are closely connected. Both events-God’s saving activity and our thankful worship-cement a giver-receiver relationship with God. God freely offers us salvation; worship and thanksgiving manifest within the community our acknowledgment and reception of salvation. Worship and thanksgiving are our yes to God’s gifts to us.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CATECHISTS AND VOLUNTEERS
Religious Education always needs volunteers. If you are interested I would love to help you find a space that would be beneficial to you and the community. All interested in being a Catechist (Religious Education Teacher) are encouraged to call me to volunteer to help in the program. I hope to begin a Children’s Liturgy of the Word in December. I have one interested adult but need 6 more to be able to begin training. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a special liturgy for children to hear the scripture in a simpler presentation so that they can understand the scripture in their everyday life. If we find 8 volunteers we will begin training right away and begin in December at the beginning of Advent. Contact Sue Unger at 503-266-9411 or stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

YOUTH MINISTRY AND JR HIGH MINISTRY

Bring your books to the Parent/child class in November. We will review the first two chapters. If you missed the meeting last Monday, please contact Sue Unger to get the materials you need for your child to prepare for Reconciliation and Eucharist for this year. Remember if you have a child in first grade that will want to receive Reconciliation and Eucharist in 2008-2009 they must be signed up for Religious Education this year.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY

This is what happens on the journey to Jerusalem: on the way we are all cleansed-saved. This is one reason why all the little things of our everyday lives-those things which happen to us along the journey - are so important. They are manifestations of God’s acting on our behalf, healing us and saving us. We want to seize them and give thanks.
One challenge of this Sunday’s gospel is to see God’s promise of salvation unfolding in these everyday events of our lives. Faithful service, then, is our response to seeing God in these events. Gratitude-acknowledging God’s actions on our behalf-is an all-enveloping context for living our lives. When gratitude is put on as a way of living, then worship, too, becomes a way of living. Rather than relegated to an hour on Sunday, worship is part of all the little actions which make up each of our days. For that, let us give thanks!

Three weeks ago the Knights of Columbus and a number of dedicated parishioners took their time and energy to work on the grounds around St. Patrick Parish. Because of this our facility looks much cleaner. It is wonderful what can be accomplished when people work together. That ultimately is the goal of the Knights of Columbus. A goal that encourages those who belong to this organization to grow together in spirituality building strong family and parish life, protecting the innocent and welcoming the stranger. Our St. Patrick Knights of Columbus Council 3484 is looking for new members that would be willing to “renew our commitments to our church” to achieve these goals. Please contact one of our Knights if you would like to be one of us.
