Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 4, 2007

Opening Prayer

Father in heaven,
God of power and Lord of mercy,
from whose fullness we have received,
direct our steps in everyday efforts.
May the changing moods of the human heart
and the limits which our failings impose on hope
never blind us to you, source of every good.
Faith gives us the promise of peace
and makes known the demands of love.
Remove the selfishness that blurs the vision of faith.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

BLESSINGS
“The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favor.”
Please join us this weekend as St. Patrick’s celebrates the joy of Jerry Giger ordained as a Deacon. Jerry will preach at all the masses this weekend. Please join us for a reception following all the Masses and wish Jerry and his wife Maureen, congratulations and well wishes.

IN SYMPATHY
Please keep in your prayers Leo Biegler the uncle of Lora Heli who passed away this past week. May we remember to keep all of our parishioners and loved ones who have passed away in our thoughts and prayers.

CRAFT BAZAAR NEXT WEEKEND
Come and join us next weekend for the Second Annual Holiday Craft Bazaar on Saturday, November 10, 9:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday, November 11, 9:00am-2:00pm in the Parish Center. The Soup Kitchen will serve Chilli, Soup, Cornbread, French Bread, Cinnamon Rolls, Cookies and Pumpkin Pie. So come and do your Christmas shopping early, have some wonderful goodies and see the unique home made crafts and gifts.

ADVENT PREPARATION
The season of Advent is almost here. As we see the decorations for Christmas in all the local stores it reminds us that we need to prepare ourselves as well for the coming of Christ in our hearts. One of the traditions of the church is to remember this season with an Advent wreath. On the weekend of December 1 & 2 after all masses, we will have the supplies for making Advent wreaths. A donation to cover costs will be appreciated. Plan this year to be actively involved in preparing for the birth of Jesus in your heart as well as your home for the holidays.

Reflecting on the Gospel

pr

In the spring of 2005, Pope John Paul II’s funeral drew the largest crowds in human history. When he was alive, he drew large crowds. It mattered little whether one was a Catholic or not, his personage was formidable and someone who was worth the effort to encounter, even if as part of a crowd of millions. Jesus, as a formidable person of his time, drew large crowds. The gospels frequently attest to this. And, similar to today, not everyone in the crowd was necessarily seeking to follow Jesus. Sometimes they were merely curious. But an encounter with Jesus takes curiosity and turns it into salvation! The gospel account for this Sunday contains an interesting human touch-a curious, short, rich man puts aside his social status and does something- not very dignified: he climbs a sycamore tree to see Jesus better!. The tax collector Zacchaeus, impelled by his desire to see Jesus, makes great effort to seek him out. Jesus responds to Zacchaeus’ earnest enthusiasm by doing for him the very thing Jesus came to do: “to seek out and to save what was lost.” The dramatic encounter brings to light something about both persons which escapes the grumbling crowd: Zacchaeus is capable of changing, and Jesus is more than an object of curiosity-he is the Savior of sinners. Because of his encounter with Jesus, Zacchaeus receives Jesus into his own home “with joy.” Moreover, this encounter brings a changed behavior in Zxacchaeus: he shares his wealth with the poor and mends his sinful ways. Because of this, Jesus says to him, “Today salvation has come to this house.” The dignity of means and status is nothing compared to the dignity God bestows on forgiven sinners who are saved. There is another interested detail in this gospel. Jesus “intended to pass through the town,” but “must stay” after encountering Zacchaeus. Jesus is the Son of Man who has come “to seek and to save what was lost.” Jesus’ ministry is hindered neither by wealth not status, but by his passionate desire to bring salvation to anyone who comes seeking. Jesus’s very identity and passion for others’ salvation compels him to stay. Perhaps it was Jesus’ very passion for other’s salvation which aroused in Zacchaeus the passion to forget this dignity and climb the tree. This leaves us with an interesting question: Would we go to the same heights as Zacchaeus to encounter Jesus, change, and be saved?

ADVENT ACTIVITIES FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Each Advent we look to the celebration of Christmas. As a community of believers this is a time of anticipation for the celebration of the birth of our Savior. There are many families that suffer on a daily basis providing the basics. Holidays bring even more stress to their budgets and can be very hard to hold onto any type of celebration. The parish of St Patrick is so generous to those that need a helping hand and their generosity is appreciated. During this Advent season we are asking for families to put a little extra aside for those that can’t. We will have a group of family names and needs for parishioners to donate things to enhance the Christmas for these families. We are also asking for personal hygiene items again for the Food Bank. This can be anything that most of us would use everyday and not think about it. Collection spots for the Personal Hygiene items will begin the First Sunday of Advent in the Parish Hall near the Resource Room and in the vestibule of the Church. The family needs will be on the bulletin board in the Auditorium. For information or questions contact Sue Unger.

FURNITURE ITEMS NEEDED
Do you have a couple of beds that you would like to find a home for?? We have a family who is in need of a queen size bed and 1 twin size bed. Also, if you have a few blankets that would be wonderful. To donate, please contact Debbie in the Parish Office, 503-266-9411.

Religious Education News

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CATECHISTS AND VOLUNTEERS
Religious Education always needs volunteers. If you are interested I would love to help you find a space that would be beneficial to you and the community. All interested in being a Catechist (Religious Education Teacher) are encouraged to call me to volunteer to help in the program. I hope to begin a Children/s Liturgy of the Word in December. I have one interested adult but need 6 more to be able to begin training. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a special liturgy for children to hear the scripture in a simpler presentation so that they can understand the scripture in their everyday life. If we find 8 volunteers we will begin training right away and begin in December at the beginning of Advent. Contact Sue Unger at 503-266-9411 or stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

PICTURES FROM 2006-2007 SCHOOL YEAR
In the hall of the Religious Education area there are pictures from last years activities. You might find someone special you would like a picture of in the collection. All are welcome to look through them and find a treasure.

VOLUNTEER SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING
This year the Archdiocese is having all parishes instruct their volunteers that work with children on a regular basis go through a special training. This training helps to focus our attention on making our community a safe place to be no matter who you are. All community members are welcome to attend in November. We have scheduled two sessions for parents of 6th -12th grade parishioners. You may attend on November 14th at 7pm or November 18th at 5:30 pm . If you need a child care person for these nights contact Sue Unger so I can make arrangements. For all volunteers we need you to attend a special training on either Monday, November 19th or Tuesday, November 20th at 6:30pm. We are required to have all volunteers attend these meetings. If you are a parent and volunteer you may attend the training for all volunteers and we will have an opportunity for you to also view the youth session before we have our youth instruction.

PICTURES FOR THE NEW YEAR
This year we would like to have pictures of all families in the Religious Education program. Please plan on sometime in the month of November either before Religious Education or after to have your family’s picture taken to put out on in our gathering area. Sue will have a set up in the Auditorium on Sunday mornings to do this.

NOVEMBER MEMORIAL PICTURES
November is the time of the year that we remember all of our loved ones that have gone before us. The blue board in the back of church will be a place that we will display pictures of those we especially pray for in the month of November. Please bring your picture with their name on the bottom so we as a community can all pray for them.

YOUTH MINISTRY AND JR HIGH MINISTRY
The Journey in Faith (6th- 8th grade) group meets on Wednesday night at 7 pm. All are welcome to join us. Our next Fun Friday will be November 9th at 7 pm. We will be playing games and have pizza. If you bring a friend make sure they have a permission note with them.

FAITH IN ACTION (9TH-12TH GRADES) meets on Sunday evening from 5:30 pm -7 pm in the Parish Center. The High School retreat for the fall has been cancelled. We hope to schedule again in late Winter or early spring. Unfortunately we did not have enough people registered to go. Contact Molly or Liz or Sue Unger for more information.

SACRAMENT PREPARATION CLASSES
For preparation for Reconciliation and Eucharist our next Parent/child class is Monday, November 5 at 7 pm in room 7& 8. Make sure you are working in your books. Bring your books to the Parent/child class in November - we will review the first two chapters. If you missed the meeting last Monday please contact Sue Unger to get the materials you need for your child to prepare for Reconciliation and Eucharist for this year. Remember if you have a child in first grade that will want to receive Reconciliation and Eucharist in 2008-2009 they must be signed up for Religious Education this year.

Our next Confirmation gathering will be the retreat beginning Friday, November 2 leaving St Patrick at 6 pm. We will be at the Hillcrest Inn in Seaside. We will return Sunday November 4th about 3 pm. Be sure to bring your sleeping bag for comfort and a snack to share. All other things will be provided. All permission forms for retreat need to be in ASAP. All candidates are expected to attend the Confirmation Retreat. Adults seeking Confirmation need to contact Sara Creel for more information.

To register for a sacrament the candidate must have a copy of their baptismal certificate if they were not baptized at St Patrick. Contact Sue Unger for questions or concerns. Sacrament Registration is closed.

CHANGES
If you are in the process of moving or have already moved to a new address, the Parish Office would like to hear from you. Often families forget to inform the Parish Office of their new address which results in extra added costs. Also, if your family dynamics have changed please contact the parish office. Our Office would like to have all the correct information especially when a mailing is being sent to all of our parishioners. By having the correct information we eliminate the possibility of offending anyone in the process. All information you provide is kept confidential. For questions or changes, please contact the Parish Office, 503-266-9411.

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE WANTED
We are in need of a volunteer who will be responsible for keeping the candles used at the altar and in the candelabra by the tabernacle refreshed and for keeping the followers (brass fittings) cleaned. If you have time and would like to help keep our sanctuary area in good order please contact Sara Creel at 503-266-9411.

ADULT SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
All are invited to join our Faith Sharing Group on Wednesday at 7 pm. It is a time of reflection on the Gospel of the week and to grow in the understanding of Scripture. Call Sue Unger or Jerry Giger with questions or concerns.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY
We invite all adults who would like to enrich their faith development with a Catholic Bible Study to join us on either Monday morning at 9:15 am or Thursday evening at 7 pm in the Parish Hall. The Bible Study will be a two year program on the Acts of the Apostles. The materials will cost $45.00 for the two year session. The Catechism class has been canceled because we had no one registered for it. If you would like to have the series at home contact Dave Bernklau for information. Contact Dave Bernklau 503-651-3708, Bill Martinusen 503-266-4926 or Sue Unger at the office.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CHRISTMAS PAGEANT
Our Christmas pageant is scheduled for December 16 in the church at 10 am. We welcome anyone who would like to work on this project to contact Sue Unger for volunteer jobs. It worked last year and we hope that many relatives and friends of the children of the RE program will be able to attend and hear the story of the birth of Christ through the acting of our children.

DRIVER NEEDED for 1-2 hours one Wednesday a month. If interested, please call Karen or Jack Sadoff, 503-266-9416.

LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
This story of Zacchaeus reminds us that we sinners must come seeking Jesus if we are to have a saving encounter with divine mercy. Sometimes it may seem to many of us that our seeking Jesus is far more difficult than climbing a tree to see and encounter him! Perhaps we are having difficulty with prayer and God seems to have abandoned us. Perhaps we are being tempted in a particular and prolonged way to do something radically against gospel values. Perhaps so much is going wrong in our lives that we are disposed to be bitter or resentful or vindictive. These are times when we can come closes to God by acknowledging our human frailty and giving ourselves over to God’s care and mercy. Sometimes just a refocus of our attention away from the difficulty toward Jesus who loves us is enough to remain faithful and encounter Jesus in a new and life-giving way.
