Opening Prayer

Almighty Father,
strong is your justice and great is your mercy.
Protect us in the burdens and challenges of life.
Shield our minds from the distortion of pride
and enfold our desire with the beauty of truth.
Help us to become more aware of your loving design
so that we may more willingly give our lives in service to all.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Reflecting on the Gospel

rc

With this Sunday’s gospel, we move immediately to the section in Luke’s Gospel which addresses the age to come. Next Sunday’s gospel describes the events at the end times. Then in two weeks on the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King, we celebrate Christ’s eternal victory at the end of time. Jesus aligns himself with the later Jewish tradition which categorically affirms the resurrection–there is life after this one. Belief in the afterlife is as much a struggle for some today as it was for the Sadducees and others in Jesus’ time; for example, New Age concepts of cosmic unity and Eastern beliefs in reincarnation witness to our desire for continued life in some form and our struggle with what that might be like. As baptized Christians, we align ourselves with Jesus who teaches resurrection and eternal life shared with him in glory. Nonetheless, our belief in Jesus and the resurrection makes eternal life no less a mystery. We believe, however, because Jesus has died and risen. He has gone before us. He has shown us the way. His victory is our sure hope. Our choices today about whether we follow Jesus faithfully and live gospel values by dying to ourselves reveal the extent of our own hope in sharing in Jesus’ risen life. In the gospel, the Sadducees are putting a question to Jesus in accord with their belief that this life is all there is. In no uncertain terms, Jesus affirms resurrection and eternal life. This “hope God gives of being raised up by him” fortifies us to remain faithful to God even when the price in this life is ultimate. We can give our life because God gives us life.

Religious Education Christmas Pageant
Our Christmas pageant is scheduled for December 16 in the church at 10 am. We welcome anyone who would like to work on this project to contact Sue Unger for volunteer jobs. It worked last year and we hope that many relatives and friends of the children of the RE program will be able to attend and hear the story of the birth of Christ through the acting of our children.

Advent Activities for Religious Education
Each Advent we look to the celebration of Christmas. As a community of believers this is a time of anticipation for the celebration of the birth of our Savior. There are many families that suffer on a daily basis providing the basics. Holidays bring even more stress to their budgets and can be very hard to hold onto any type of celebration. The parish of St Patrick is so generous to those that need a helping hand and their generosity is appreciated. During this Advent season we are asking for families to put a little extra aside for those that can’t. We will have a group of family names and needs for parishioners to donate things to enhance the Christmas for these families. We are also asking for personal hygiene items again for the Food Bank. This can be anything that most of us would use everyday and not think about it. Collection spots for the personal Hygiene items will begin the first Sunday of Advent in the Parish Hall near the Resource Room and in the vestibule of the Church. The family needs will be on the bulletin board in the Auditorium. For information or questions contact Sue Unger.

BAKER’S ACRES HOLIDAY BAZAAR
Come and join us for our annual Bazaar Thursday, November 15th through Saturday, November 17th from 9am-6pm. Featured local artists and craftspeople. Come and see garden art, kitchen crafts, slippers, quilts just to name a few. Bazaar will be held at Bakers Acres in Canby, 8245 Vale Garden Rd., Canby. 2.5 miles south on Hwy 170. For more information contact: Marguerite Baker-503-266-9039, Suzan~BakersAcreBazaar@gmail.com or visit www.BakersAcres.Blogspot.com.

FAST AND PRAY WITH NCCW AND ACCW ON NOVEMBER 15TH
Join our first nationwide fast to relieve hunger, to be held on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, November 15th. Join us in asking God to give his children the grace to work toward eliminating hunger from the world. Some of the suggestions for observing the day of fast: *Fast in whatever way is right for you. Everything from eliminating between meals to a water only fast can be productive as long as it stimulates prayerful consideration of the needs of the poor. Reflect on how we might simplify our lives to make larger share of resources available to others. Religious Education Catechists and volunteers
Religious Education always needs volunteers. If you are interested I would love to help you find a space that would be beneficial to you and the community. All interested in being a Catechist (Religious Education Teacher) are encouraged to call me to volunteer to help in the program. I hope to begin a Children/s Liturgy of the Word in December. I have one interested adult but need 6 more to be able to begin training. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a special liturgy for children to hear the scripture in a simpler presentation so that they can understand the scripture in their everyday life. If we find 8 volunteers we will begin training right away and begin in December at the beginning of Advent. Contact Sue Unger at 503-266-9411 or stpatrickreligiouseducation@yahoo.com.

Pictures from 2006-2007 school year
In the hall of the Religious Education area there are pictures from last years activities. You might find someone special you would like a picture of in the collection. All are welcome to look through them and find a treasure.

Volunteer Safe Environment Training
This year the Archdiocese is having all parishes instruct their volunteers that work with children on a regular basis go through a special training. This training helps to focus our attention on making our community a safe place to be no matter who you are. All community members are welcome to attend in November. We have scheduled two sessions for parents of 6th -12th grade parishioners. You may attend on November 14th at 7pm or November 18th at 5:30 pm . If you need a child care person for these nights contact Sue Unger so I can make arrangements. For all volunteers we need you to attend a special training on either Monday, November 19th or Tuesday, November 20th at 6:30pm. We are required to have all volunteers attend these meetings. If you are a parent and volunteer you may attend the training for all volunteers and we will have an opportunity for you to also view the youth session before we have our youth instruction.

Pictures for the new year
This year we would like to have pictures of all families in the Religious Education program. Please plan on sometime in the month of November either before Religious Education or after to have your family’s picture taken to put out on in our gathering area. Sue will have a set up in the Auditorium on Sunday mornings to do this.

November Memorial Pictures
November is the time of the year that we remember all of our loved ones that have gone before us. The blue board in the back of church will be a place that we will display pictures of those we especially pray for in the month of November. Please bring your picture with their name on the bottom so we as a community can all pray for them.

Youth Ministry and Jr High Ministry
The Journey in Faith (6th- 8th grade) group meets on Wednesday night at 7 pm. All are welcome to join us. Our next Fun Friday will be December 14th at 7 pm. This will be a Christmas party. Watch the bulletin for more information. If you bring a friend make sure they have a permission note with them.

Faith in Action (9th-12th grades) meets on Sunday evening from 5:30 pm -7 pm in the Parish Center. All High School teens are welcome to join us. Contact Molly or Liz or Sue Unger for more information.

Sacrament Preparation Classes
For preparation for Reconciliation and Eucharist our next Parent/child class is Monday, December 3rd at 7 pm in room 7& 8. We will be reviewing chapter 3 & 4. Make sure you are working in your books. Bring your books to the Parent/child class in November ~ we will review the first two chapters. If you missed the meeting last Monday please contact Sue Unger. Remember if you have a child in first grade that will want to receive Reconciliation and Eucharist in 2008-2009 they must be signed up for Religious Education this year.

Our next Confirmation gathering will be November 18th at 4 pm in room 7&8. Be sure to bring your folder and any paper work you have completed. Confirmation had a great retreat. The candidates did Public Service Announcements on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We will be showing these at Coffee and rolls in January so all can see the talent of the Youth of St Patrick. Also we are trying to get them on our webpage hopefully soon. Watch the bulletin for further information about the PSA’s Thank you to all the volunteers that helped make this retreat a success. Anthony and Betty Crawford, Brian Masterson, David Bernklau, Joe and Ann Boyd our cooks, Fr Nicholas of Our Lady of Victory Church in Seaside, Mary Jo Stacey of Our Lady of Victory, Martin Meskers, Donna Green, and all the candidates and their families for giving their time and sharing their gifts. Allowing our candidates to reflect on the gifts of the Holy Spirit benefits us all as a community. Adults seeking Confirmation need to contact Sara Creel for more information.

CHRISTMAS CHILDREN’S CHOIR
The seasons of Advent and Christmas are fast approaching. Children, would you like to use your musical gifts and talents to beautify our Christmas liturgies? We would love to have you join us! The Children's Choir, open to children from kindergarten through middle school, will have its first rehearsal in the church on Sunday, Dec. 2 following the 11:00 am Mass--app. 12:20 to 1 pm or shortly thereafter. We will continue rehearsals on the next 3 Sundays: Dec. 9, 16 & 23. The Children’s Choir will be singing for the Family Mass on Christmas Eve (5 pm) as well as for the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6 at the 11:00 am Mass. It is really vital that we have some older children in addition to the younger ones, so that there will be good leaders. Parents, please encourage your middle schoolers to join the choir and develop some excellent leadership skills. Also, please come to the first rehearsal with your children to register and/or update their information. Thank you. For more information, please call Lora Heli at 503-263-3840

ADVENT PREPARATION
The season of Advent is almost here. As we see the decorations for Christmas in all the local stores it reminds us that we need to prepare ourselves as well for the coming of Christ in our hearts. One of the traditions of the church is to remember this season with an Advent wreath. On the weekend of December 1st & 2nd after all masses we will have the supplies for making Advent wreaths - a donation to cover costs will be appreciated. Plan this year to be actively involved in preparing for the birth of Jesus in your heart as well as your home for the holidays.

THANK YOU
A very special Thank you to Fir Point Farms for their generous donation of fruit for Jerry Giger’s reception last weekend. We would like to encourage all of our parishioners to support the local businesses that support St. Patrick.

CHANGES
If you are in the process of moving or have already moved to a new address, the Parish Office would like to hear from you. Often families forget to inform the Parish Office of their new address which results in extra added costs. Also, if your family dynamics have changed please contact the parish office. Our Office would like to have all the correct information especially when a mailing is being sent to all of our parishioners. By having the correct information we eliminate the possibility of offending anyone in the process. For questions or changes, please contact the Parish Office, 503-266-9411.
